Question about Washing Machines

Open Question

I own a Kenmore Washer built in July, 2005. It is the Super Capacity 3.5 Quiet Tumble Action Wash w/Easy Access. The model# is 417.44152400. The machine has been stored inside a climate controlled office building for several years and not used much prior to it's storage in September, 2006. The problem is that the machine will run fine for twenty minutes or so. However, immediately after the first fast spin the machine will come to a stop and sit idle and make a humming sound like a garbage disposal that is stuck when you flip the switch. I let it sit for a minute or two, hoping it was just part of the cycle process, as well as smelling for smoke, to see if a wire was burning, but there is no smell. I then hit the pause button, waited, and hit pressed the start button again, but the humming just continued again. I finally cleared the system and restarted the machine from the beginning with the same results. I know some machines have a pause between cycles, but the humming sound concerns me. If you are able to call out, please contact me at 512-694-4955 to discuss the problem. Thank you

SOURCE: Kenmore washing machine model 110 wash cycle stops

DOES IT DO THIS ON EVERY WASH OR SOMETIMES? IF SOMETIMES, CHECK LID SWITCH( THERE'S A LITTLE HOLE WHEN YOU OPEN THE LID, ON THE LID SHOULD HAVE A LITTLE PLASTIC PIECE THAT GOES IN THAT HOLE. THE SWITCH IS UNDER, INSIDE THAT HOLE. YOU CAN GET A PEN OR KEY TO SEE IF IT'S BROKEN.)

SOURCE: MACHINE STOPPED - BURNING SMELL COMING FROM WASHER

The burning smell is from your coupling and when this breaks the rubber spins across the plastic face of the opposite coupling. Your washer will not wash or spin until this is replaced. fortunately these are cheap and easy to replace. Refer to my step by step instructions to replace yours.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Here is another link that gives you options for the different model numbers.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/43142?searchedModel=43142&postFilter=true&modelFilter=true&productCategoryId=0153200&brandId=&brandFilter=false&categoryFilter=true

The 43142 number is a Stock Number, not a model number and could relate to any number of Sears products.

By looking at the parts site with the full model number you should be able to find the handle, Sears price and "Manufacturer substitute numbers".

The 417 prefix for these washers means that they are manufactured by Kelvinator (Frigidaire) so you may be able to get parts from an appliance parts store stocking their products.

We have a Kenmore 3.5 Super Capacity Quiet Tumble Action Wash Easy Access. The spin cycle works however the water won't drain and our laundry is soaked. Help...

It could be either the pump or a clog in the discharge hose. Take a shop vac and attach it to the discharge hose to remove the water from the machine. Remove the pump housing and run a wire down the discharge hose to check for a clog. If there is no obstructions, reattach the pump housing and remove the pump motor. Run a spin cycle and see if the pump motor turns.

I have a Kennmore super capacity 3.5 quiet tumble, action wash, easy access washer. The problem is, it won't do the spin cycle and clothes are coming out wet. I looked at the tech sheet and it says to check...

You might want to check the plumbing in the bottom of the machine for clogs. On most modern washers, the spin cycle will not start if the water is not completely drained or doesn't drain fast enough. I had a similar problem and found a there was a rubber fitting with a plastic cup inside that serves as a trap to prevent debris from entering the pump. It had a piece of scotchbrite, forty cents worth of change and a hairpin stuck in it.

WHAT IS THE LOAD CAPCITY SIZE OF WASHER MODEL 110.20702990

On newer, and sometimes a little newer, Whirlpool and Kenmore (Kenmore is made by Whirlpool) considers a few things in determing capacity. Most of the inner baskets are the same size, but they also add in agitator action into the mix. A Kenmore with an auger top agitator would have higher capacity than a Kenmore with just a normal agitator, even though it has the same sized drum. So a super capacity washer would have theoretically less CLEANING CAPACITY than a super capacity plus. The agitator action is actually what determines capacity on these models. So, with that in mind, cubic load should be about the same on both units. Sorry that I had to go into "Bill Nye The Washer Guy" mode, but thats about the only way to describe. Let me know if I can confuse you any more haha. Seriously though, if you need further help or info, write back, and will try to get you some other information. Remember, this theory only works on top load "normal people" washers, not the front loaders.
