The drive works great as a CD only drive. It won't do a thing with DVDs. I have upgraded the firmware to 1.07 and I am informed that no special driver is needed other than the standard Windows driver. It is identified correctly in Windows manager. I have used diagnostic from SysyemSuite 8 and it fails miserably for DVD tests, but does well with CD tests.

I have this exact same problem and it seems that everywhere on the internet i go to find a solution, there are the same "solutions" posted. No one has found a fix for this short of completely reinstalling windows, and that doesnt even work all of the time. The problem is not with a certain type of disc, or it not being closed properly, or the write speed. The problem is the drive just ceases to read DVD disc of all sorts. For some it starts as only one type of disc, usually burned ones, then will become all DVD disc, burned or movie/game.

My drive started out superb, best drive id seen in a long time. Read and burned everything it was suppose to. Then about a year ago, maybe closer to 2 now, it quit reading SOME burned dvds that it had read fine prior to then. Then it became all burned DVDs. Then, when the new FFXI expansion came out, i inserted the DVD to install it and it would not even recognize the disc was in it. Disc read fine in other drives, tried 5 of my other friends game disc, would not recognize any of them. I tried a regular DVD movie, it would not recognize it. not a single DVD will read in my drive now, and i am furious as the problem semed to happen right at the end of my warranty.

Myself having a bit of electronics schooling and understanding, decided to opent he rive up and see if maybe something had burned out, or if the DVD lense had warped or something. Tested and checked EVERY SINGLE item in the drive, they all were reading properly, and the lense was not warped/cracked/broken in anyway. SO i left my case wide open, reinstlaled my exposed drive to see if the lense would move back and forth to read it, and to make sure it was spinning properly. Everything worked fine on the drive. The problem has to lie somewhere else, and it is being led to believe it could be a registry problem caused by trying to copy or burn some copyrighted stuff. As a fresh install of windows usually fixes the problem, this would lead me to believe it to be true.

I however, have no spare disc drive and since my drive wont read ANY disc at all anymore, DVD or CD, I can not reinstall my windows xp at this time. So i have to wait til some extra cash flows in to buy a new drive all together. Hope it helps, or atleast can lead someone on the right path to finding a solution.

These kind of problems occur commonly when u use non branded DVDs, which are not fully understood by ur DVD authoring tool.

The easiest solution would be...Try writing in speeds lower (less than half) of what is specified on the disc

Hope this solves ur problem!

IF not, u may have to consult ur drive supplier...Anyway try using good DVDs atleast once before u take it for repair

bye

Every CD is burnt. If it reads for instance original installation CD's or audio CD's than the problem isn't in DVD ROM but either in a type of DVD (-R,+R...) or the problem is caused due to fact that DVD wasn't closed after burning on another computer.

Hi,
on creation or compilation of any cd/dvd regardless of disk format or capacity. the finalizing of a disk. will write a TOC ( table Of Contents ) this will inform the drive reading the disk. whats on it. even if a cd or dvd writes 1 track of music. if thats all you put on the disk, and finalise it. that will be the finished capacity. if you use rw disks. you must format the disk before re-using it.
this will completely erase all previous data on it.
If as stated you are using Nero. there are setting options, to create a multi-session cd/dvd whereby you can add additional files at a later date. however this disk will not be readable, by any other computer-cd/dvd player. until the disk has been finalised, and produced the Table-Of-Contents.
