Question about MSI KT4V (MS-6712) Motherboard

MAX HDD CAPACITY ADDRESSABLE

The 120Gb HDD on my system that is 5 years old recently failed. What is the maximum size of HDD that this motherboard can "see"? I am proposing to install 160Gb. Will this be OK?

Can anyone help me with this one please?

Mike, Thanks for the info. I tried to install a Seagate 500 Gb but at the partitioning stage, XP could not see it. Hence the shift to a smaller, but still tasty 160 Gb! The original Western Digital 120 Gb failed after 5 years.

    Cheers

Hi john,
The issue what operating system are you running? Not your board).
Windows 98 can see a max of 64GB & windows 98SE, 137GB. Win XP can see a max of 2 exobytes.
(What is 1exobyte, EB. In decimal terms, an exabyte is a billion gigabytes).

Your 160BG drive is safe with XP.

John, download the Mfg's tool utility for your 500GB drive or your 160 GB drive. Create a bootable floppy disk or a bootable cd-rom disk. (They run in dos like window). With the software from the Mfg. you can setup the drive. Windows will than see your 500GB drive. With windows XP home or pro, windows must be up to date. As you mentioned (at the partitioned stage), hence not windows update. That's why I suggest you use the Mfg's software. Understand when doing a fresh install of windows on a large drive windows will only see so much of the drive but when windows finishes installing it will see all of the drive. So don't let windows spook you into thinking (Where is my GB's).

What is the maximum capacity of harddisk that can support by biostar M7VKS MB (AMD Duron)

It is not about the motherboard but more so about the operating system. If you're using windows XP with SP1 or higher there is no real limit. Windows 98 can see a max of 64GB & windows 98SE, 137GB. Win XP can see a max of 2 exobytes.
(What is 1exobyte?, EB. In decimal terms, an exabyte is a billion gigabytes). Setting up you're drive properley is also very, very important. Download the hard disk drives manufacture setup software. Only connect the new HDD. Create either a bootable floppy disk or a bootable CD from the manufactors site. Boot to the floppy or CD and set up the HDD. This includes sector size FAT NTFS ECT. You will also be able to format the new HDD. When installing windows do not allow windows to format the disk. (Leave it as is). Make sure you're new drive is shown in you're bios before installing windows xxx.

Cheers'
