You sand should last many many years if you clean it at least yearly. You can buy a chemical from your pool supply to clean it. Normally you don't need to add any. If you ever allow your pool to get very low ph it can actually disolve sand though. A little trick if you're too cheap and lazy to change all the sand is ususally only the top of the sand gets very dirty. If you open your filter, you can scoop out about 50 lbs from the top and only replace that. Be careful not to get sand in the down tube though.

DON'T OVER-CLEAN YOUR FILTER.
WITH SAND FILTERS THE SAND MUST STAY ROUGH TO FILTRATE
OVER FILTRATION WILL RUIN YOUR SAND, MAKING IT TO SMOOTH TO FILTRATE
WITH PROPER CLEANING ONCE A MONTH OR ONCE EVERY 1.5 MONTHS YOUR SAND WILL OUT LAST YOUR FILTER!

How to change sand in sand filter model sp 312

  • For our top mount filter, you must first disconnect the pipes leading into the valve and open the drain plug on the filter. Next, remove the clamp holding the multiport valve to the tank body. Once the valve has been removed, you will be able to see the sand bed. The best way to remove the sand is to either use a portable wet/dry vacuum or just scoop it out with a small can. Once the old sand has been removed, hose out the inside of the tank to clean the filter out. Once this water is drained, replace the drain cap and fill the tank 2/3 full of water. This is to protect the lateral assembly while the new sand is added. Add the sand slowly till the laterals are fully covered, then just pour in the remaining sand. DO NOT get sand in the vertical pipe sticking up from the bottom of the filter tank. The standpipe may be covered with a paper cup to prevent sand going into the pipe.
  • For a side mount tank, rotate the multi-port valve to the closed position and open the filter's drain plug. Remove the tank closure dome and expose the top diffuser. The top diffuser lifts off and the old sand can be removed. DO NOT get sand in the internal piping.

How to change a lateral in an s244s hayward sand filter

You will have to remove the sand so you might as well buy new sand. Remove drain cap and allow to drain. Remove multi port valve from top of filter. This model should have a clamp holding the valve onto the filter. You will have to disconnect the piping from valve for removal, so if it's piped solid, cut piping, and buy PVC unions to glue back in place so you can open in the future. If it's hose, then no problem. OK so once you remove the valve, you can see inside and see the sand. Take a shop vacuum and vacuum the sand from the filter. Take your time and empty vac, before it gets too heavy. Once empty, you'll see the laterals in the bottom. They if you rinse them off with a hose, to remove sand to keep from binding. The laterals should fold up to the center. Once folded you can remove assembly. After installing new laterals, partially fill the filter with water before adding sand. Cover the down pipe so no sand can enter. Add sand gently so you don't break new laterals (water helps cushion the adding of sand) You can download a manual here :

I have a Hayward s200 sand filter. I run it all the time mainly for about 10-12 hrs a day and my water still doesn't clear up. People keep mentioning the filter isn't working properly. And i notice a...

1.If you don't have your manual, download one here :http://www.haywardnet.com/products/manuals/pdfs/manual23.pdf
2. Read the manual.
3. The orange substance is usually iron oxide (rust). Normally you should have no steel in your plumbing system, only brass or plastic. Be sure to check that nothing has been changed, bolts, valves etc. Be sure nothing on the pump has been changed to introduce steel.
4. If you haven't every cleaned your filter, do so. This should be done 1-2 times per season. You can buy some material at any pool supply. Have you ever changed your sand? If so use only good quality pool filter sand NOT REGULAR SAND. If you've had the filter apart before, check that all piping is as shown in the diagram in manual.
5. Have pool water tested at your local pool supply co. They can tell if there are metals. There are some chemcials that can help remove metals.
It is also possible that you have disolved solids that are too small for the filter to remove. There are floculants that you can add to help settle these. You'd add the floc, run pump short time and then turn off letting solids settle to bottom. See your local pool supply co, they can give you all the ifo you need.

You may have to change the sand if you never have. Or if it's not too bad you can "clean" it. When you removed the plug form the pool, there should actually be two parts. This first part threads directly into the filter, and has a screen on it to hold back the sand. The second one is the plug. This is the only part you should remove, except when changing sand etc. Even if the pool filter is working you can have cloudy water. See you pool supply, and try a floc to help settle dissolved solids in your pool. You add this, run the pump awhile to mix, turn pump off overnight, and then vacuum everything next day. Then turn pump back on.

My husband changed the sand in our Hayward Sand filter for our pool and now it leakes sand into the pool. What's wrong?

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

He broke the lateral assembly in the process and it will need to be replaced. You'll need to know the model number of the filter to get one. Then remove the sand, replace the assembly, fill the tank ~1/2 way with water, slowly add the sand back into the tank and replace the valve.

How to change sand in Hayward S-200 Sand filter

hayward S-180 filter takes 150lbs, S-210 takes 200lbs not familur with the S-200. To change sand you have to remove the vari flow valve on top. You can either unplumb the filter and roll it over on its side and try washing the sand out or try scooping it out upright. Whatever you do dont damage the laterals on the bottom of the filter. When refilling with sand you want to make sure all the laterals are undamaged and in the down position. I always fill the filter half full of water to keep the sand from damaging the laterals while re-filling the filter with sand. Make sure you use pool filter sand and not play sand!
