2 possible causes and to check them both you will have to take off the cover of the tv and test parts:
1 - the power cable has an internal break - test it for continuity.
2 - the power source has failed - check the voltages at the main capacitors and the exits.
If you haven't done that before and you don't have even the slightest experience in dealing with electronics it's better to leave that to a pro.

We had just turned on the DVD/VCR and put a video tape in and before we started to play it. It powered off. Now when we try to turn it on it turns off again.

Did the tape remain inside the VCR after the power-off? if so, it is probably one of many causes including:

the power supply may have several short-circuit/leaky components within it, especially electrolytic capacitors and IC regulators;

if the VCR operates mechanically with more than 1 belt, chances are the belt(s) will need replacement (but not likely if the model is relatively recent, i.e. less than 5 years old).

Presuming the unit is idle, no tapes or discs in it, and it reverts to standby/clock by itself, without any action from you, then it would be poor regulation from the PSU.

Being a budget-model, the PSU should be pretty straightforward and not too expensive to fix.

No power to dvd-vcr player

check the circuit breaker. plug something into the outlet that you know works and see if it turns on.
dont think that there is a fuse inside. If the cables seems good ( ohm it out) then the unit might be shot. sorry...

How to disable the vcr on emerson dvd vcr combo?

Hello sjz4923,
I understand your frustration, however you are not going to want to hear this so what I'll do is just come out and explain why what you are asking is almost impossible, and I'll offer a solution that will help you possibly repair this problem.

The term tv/dvd/vcr combo is a misnomer. The term implies that there are three components in this TV set (TV, VCR, DVD) when in reality there are 1 and 1/2 components in this unit. The TV section of this set is actually the VCR section (RF tuner, IF processor, Video and audio, sync section) what is added to make the TV part of this is the deflection, and High voltage section to power and control the signal to the CRT. As far as the DVD section this basically is a DVD player without the video output, but rather the analog video plugs into the VCR video out. You do have aux ports for DVD video out but these may or may not be amplified video. In a nut shell The TV and the VCR are the same electronics except for the deflection and HV circuits, and the DVD and VCR are separate except for the audio and video main inputs.

So what you are asking is almost impossible since the TV and VCR are the circuit.

Now to repair your problem. What is happening is that the signal that the circuit uses to tell that the VCR carriage is connected properly is not being sensed, what this could mean is the the signal processor is bad or the position control is malfunctioning. The first thing I would do is to make sure that the position control (a wheel on the circuit board which the carriage sets on top of and a peg from the carriage sets into a hole on the wheel) is in sync with the carriage wheel.

Also if you have the equipment you can check the sync signal created by the control and compare it with the signal on the schematic of the TV.

Now having said all of this, if you don't have a background in electronics I would suggest that you get a TV repair technician to work on this problem.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Magnavox mwd2205 - VCR Function

grace0308, Many of the combo units have multiple video outputs and some, like the SVHS and RGB Component outputs, are for DVD only. Make sure that you are plugged into the proper video output. Play a tape and try them all.

Will not turn on

It sounds like the VCR ate the tape. When this happened to me (with a different brand name) I took the top off of the unit and carefully removed the cassette and DVD.

USE CAUTION WHILE DOING THIS AND DUH!!! UNPLUG THE UNIT BEFORE REMOVING THE SCREWS!!!!!!

You should unhook the unit from the tv connections and take it to the table or other flat surface. While it is unplugged!!! remove the screws and remove the top of the unit. BE CAREFUL not to remove anything else!
Simply remove the cassette and DVD. Then plug in the power and make sure it comes on properly. Open the DVD tray to make sure it works also.
Then reconnect the unit to your tv and ENJOY!!
Trust me, it works... I've done it several times. I cannot promise that your problem is an eaten tape... but it sounds like it and when this happens 90% of the time, it triggers the unit to "turn off" due to a problem. Therefore, you turn it on and the unit turns itsself right back off!
I believe this will work for you :)

Unit dead.
Local repair shop said it's un-econimical to repair.
Admitted they had no service manual.
Said they could 'have a look' but likely repair cost would be over $300. Charged me $50 for quote. Useless Gits.

My opinion & findings.
Power supply sensative to spikes.
I Suggest a power filter in-line with unit.

Disconnected all sub-boards from main.
Hiccuping PSU (5v wobbles between 2&3V).
Replace switchmode IC & feedback IC. No change.
Eventualy identified short-cct diode as listed below.

0402-001194 Diode is a Gen-purpose 200V 2A diode. I used a 1n4007 (1A), so I expect to have to replace it in future. It's "D1S35" located very close to right rear corner of main board, part of 15V and 12V rails. Next time I'll use a 'faster', higher rated diode.
I also had no clock progression. Time could be set but would not advance. Been like that for ages - I thought it was a user clock-setting error. Identified Dead 32.768 khz crystal (XT601).

Hired manual $10 +postage
Non-faulty parts + postage $40
1 diode $1

Satisfaction, plenty.

No power to DVD combo player. VCR OK.

The power circuit for the DVD and the vcr are separate look for a open diode and transistor in the circuit that supply the DVD.GOOD LUCK.
