Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

2 Answers

My playstation 3 has been working just fine. It notified me to perform an upgrade, and I upgraded the system software. Since then, however, I cannot access anything but the system software upgrade page. Only the zero (Cancel) button works and it will not allow me to cancel the upgrade or use any other function from either a remote universal controllor or from the handheld wireless controller. I have rebooted multiple times, but the same problem. Obviously the upgrade has corrupted something. Help. Thanks, Tom Bashore

I am still trying to see if there is a simple way to restore my PS3 to where it was before an update was performed. I have tried the above with no success. Any other thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Tom Bashore

The upgrade process wasn't allowed to finish, probably the connection went down during it. But you might have just stumbled on the dreaded 3.21 firmware update and everything was messed up.
Nothing more you can do, unfortunately the console will have to be sent to a dealer to be reflashed, something that requires specialized equipment.

I had another thought. It would be cheaper to buy a new hard drive and install fresh than to get this repaired. If I replaced the hard drive (seems easy enough to do) and then downloaded the upgrade software from Sony, would that work to get the system back up and running?

Any thoughts about just replaing the hard drive? Can get on for $30 on ebay.

That upgrade was for the firmware, which is installed in the equivalent of the BIOS, not  some other software/game update that would be installed in the hard disk. Changing it will not have any effect.
If you want to make a last effort you can try to reflash the firmware yourself following this

    http://us.playstation.com/support/system...
but for this to work you must be able to navigate to the update folder on the stick , which you can't.
As i said your PS3 must have the firmware reflashed by a dealer, using special equipment.

What a pain!! I had no issues prior to the update installation. Seems like Sony should take care of this, but I can't figure out how to get to them through their website.

    Thanks for the advice.

You can't get them to their site because all hardware fault are addressed simply by sending the console to them to be repaired. Unfortunately firmware update errors aren't considered as covered by the warranty, so you will gonna have to pay for it. Don't send the console by mail, go yourself to the dealer and make noise, you might get a smaller bill, it's their fault afterall if the update hasn't worked as it should.

Unfortunately both the dealer and Sony site want $120 as a base to repair this. It is not the money as much as the lousy service. This is the second time I have had trouble with Sony products and their service. I only use the playstation for the blu-ray player anyway, so it is just simpler to buy a new blu-ray player (and not that much more expensive). Guaranteed it will not be Sony.

Hello,

surely, the upgrade has corrupted the hard drive. The solution I'm going to give you now will involve a complete/full system restore. Follows the steps and you shouldn't have any problem:

Put your PS3 in Standby Mode. The first thing your going to want to know is your model number. It can be found on the back panel of the PS3 on the serial number label, and it will begin with CECH. Example - Serial: XXXXXXXXXXXX-CECHXXX -

For models: CECHA01, BO1, E01, E01MG, G01, H01, H01MG, K01, LO1, AND P01, it will have a power switch on the back. Flip it off then back on and you will have a solid red indicator light on the front.

For models: CECH-2001A and 2001B, press the power button on the front until the indicator light turns red. If all else fails unplug the power cord and plug it back

Time to enter Safe Mode. Press and hold your finger over the power button on the front until you hear three beeps and the indicator light goes back to red. Then release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds the third and final beep will sound then the indicator light will return to red.)

Press and hold your finger over the power button again until you hear a quick double beep. The release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds you will hear the double beep.)

You will then see this screen. "Connect the controller with the USB cable, then press the PS button".

Connect the USB cable to the USB port on the front of your PS3 and the top of your game controller, (between the left and right bumpers). Then Press the PS button in the center of the controller.

You will then see this screen. -REMINDER: -BY DOING THE FOLLOWING ALL OF YOUR DATA ON YOUR PS3 WILL BE LOST, YOUR ONLINE STATS ARE ON THE NETWORK SO YOU WILL GET THAT STUFF BACK, INCLUDING GAMES AND ADD ONS YOU BOUGHT FROM THE PSN.-

Select option number 5. (Restore PS3 System). Then select yes to perform step. You will then see this screen. "The hard disk's file system is corrupt and will be restored.

The PS3 will then restart. You will see many different languages, all that is is saying is, "Connect the controller with the USB cable, then press the PS button". Press the PS button and set your settings when it finishes it will start up and its fixed!

I wish you good luck.

Did not work. I was able to reboot as you suggested and the system went through the various 'beeps" fine, but the first screen that comes up is not a reminder screen, but rather the systems update screen again with its instructions that you will not be able to use with Linux, etc. The system had already gone through this update process. Again the only control I have is with the zero and I can't cancel the update

Any other way to get to safe mode? Do I need to somehow reload system software from scratch? Any other way to get to a system restore?

    Still struggling.

Any other way to get to safe mode? Do I need to somehow reload system
software from scratch? Any other way to get to a system restore?

    Hello,

unfortunately, there is no other way to enter into safe mode apart from the way I gave to you. You can check this play station forum and you will discover that its the same: http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayS...

Secondly, yes, you need to reload the system system software from the scratch because its actually a software problem.

The steps below directs on how to perform system restore. Its from play station forum and I don't think its different from the one I gave you earlier but you can try it. And if you are still having the problem, after all these solutions, then I would suggest you call Sony via the phone and they should be able to direct you on what to do next since they

    1. Turn off Playstation®3.
    2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
    3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
    4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
    5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
    6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

    The current Recovery Menu supports:
    • Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
    • Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
    • Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
    • Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
    • Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
    • System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

    Take care.

Youtube changed its file system from videos being in .flv format to .mp4, you'll have to wait for Sony to make the next move on restoring the PS3's ability to watch online video.

To perform the update you require a active internet connection or you might just take the unit to the store for this update which I consider better.

Good luck.
