Question about GE GSS20IEPWW / GSS20IEPCC Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

My ge profile regrigerator is not cold in the refrigerator section, ice breezes on the back wall of the freezer and it will make ice at times. I think it is a defrost issue as I will shut off for a while and turn back on and it seems to get cold for a while. How do I know if it is a defrost time or heater issue?

Pull the refrig out and remove the 8 " x 10 " panel . Behind this panel , is the main control board . Unplug the refrig . Remove the BLUE plug from the board , with 3 larger wires going to it . Looking at the blue plug , the sequence will be wire1,wire2,space,wire3 . Get a short piece of insulated wire , and strip about 1/4 inch from each end . Insert 1 end into wire2 , and the other into wire3 . Plug the refrig back in . After about 3 min , look in the freezer , at the bottom , behind the crisper , look for a red glow . If no red glow , unplug the refrig , and reassemble the plug and cover . This no glow , indicates a shorted defrost heater WR51X10101 . It is also advisable to replace the defrost thermostat ( pt. number WR50X10068 ) when replacing the heater . To access these parts , you will have to remove the inside rear wall of the freezer . The heater , is at the bottom of the coils , held on with 2 screws , and the thermostat , is the 1 " cylinder , with a blue and pink wire going to it , clipped on the top left of the coils .
If you do get a red glow , then the # 4 thermistor is bad . This tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp and when to cycle off due to selected temperature .

Remove this panel, take a hand held hair dryer, defrost the evaopoator coil behind this panel, then check the heater element around or under the coil for continuity,if its good, then check the timer or adaptive defrost controls, normally its the heater, the reason it coold better after you shut it off and restart it is because you are manually defrosting the coil

Water in bottom of refridgerator

Most refrigerators defrost every eight hours and over a period of time the drain line that comes down from freezer into a cup like object top middle and back of the fresh food section. If blocked by gunk or ice you will see trails of liquid leaking down the rear wall of fresh food compartment until it reaches the crisper drawers. This is not always the same with every model as you may see frozen ice flowing down ther rear wall of freezers on side by sides. Here is an example Click here=> Whirlpool Leak Photo taken by TechnicianBrian He has been around a good bit and deserves credit for his contributions. Here is another way to make this look more si mple in clip below. TechnicianBrian.com And in this photo are several parts listed in photo group #1 were it is most likely running down the wall=> MagicChef CTB1921AR fresh food section. If you still have questions please ask and rate me if I was able to explain this well enough. Every refrigerator is made different so these are examples only. The key is to find if ice or just gunk has blocked you defrost drain. Unplug and then remove the rear panel in back of freezer. We need to see if the water is overflowing the condensate drain tray or if the blockage is in the turn the drain leads down back of your refrigerator. Much more on this page=> Leaking Refrigerators! This is a common tip so I will be placing this post and add as we go new ideas listed in Sea Breeze Tips Section. If you run into any problems along the way of repair please let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Ge profile 2004 open door and temp controls off shut door open they come back on light was staying on sometimes to bottom half of coils in freezor froze freezer working but temp in frig 50s on off fri

It is possible the refrigerator is low on Freon. You will need to remove the back panel inside the rear of freezer to examine the evaporator coils. If only a few rows have frost it will be time to replace the refrigerator. If the control panel in the freezer dispenser are coming on and off there may be a bad connection in the plug under the top left door hinge cover. Check that the plug is tight. Let me know what you see first behind the freezer wall, Thanks Sea Breeze

GE 24 Profile refrigerator: The freezer part

my refrigerator goes into auto defrost every 60hrs for 45 minutes or till the bi metal(defrost thermostat) says it had enough....recently i had ice built up on the coil because my defrost thermostat was stuck open...

ice builds up because the moisture that comes from opening the door or food condenses on the cold coil...tempurature of the coil is below 32 degrees which will ice up the condensed moisture...

defrost is timed to remove this build up

Ice build up on bottom of freezer. Water leaks out of freezer possibly from melting. Water leaks onto floor of kitchen.

Your problem is possibly one of two things. The ice maker is leaking or the defrost tray behind the rear panel inside freezer back wall is clogged with ice or something else. If you know its not the ice maker unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel to see if the drain is blocked there, Let me know, Sea Breeze

We may need to look at the control circuit board the back of refrigerator if the refrigerator has stopped cooling. Let me know if the compressor is running or not. Let me know, I have a repair manual if you like.
