Question about Briggs & Stratton Ignition Kit 2-8 HP Engines with Breaker Point Ignition #5012D

I have a 8hp briggs engine and the float sticks sometimes open sometimes closed. I am unable to figure out why. Every thing seems to be free. I work it in the house with water works ok take it and put it in it will do one or the other. I am thinking it could be the gasket doing it is that possible?

It may not be just the float. Is the needle seat sticking? a carb kit would be well worth it. It will come with gasket, needle and seat and new float. Depending on engine cost about 15.00 (You didn't list EXACTLY what model of engine)

Starting trouble

if it's on a pushmower you will have to remove cowling to expose top of crank & flywheel & confirm the key holding the flywheel in place has not sheared. common issue after abrupt stop of blade. If carb problem would need more details on type of briggs. did you check for spark? if you have gas check to make sure float is not stuck closed. sometimes with gum buil up the needle sticks & stops gas flow. i have tapped slightly & been lucky to free but more often have to take apart & clean

How do I drain the oil on a Briggs and Stratton 8hp 191702 ride on mower ? I can't seem to locate the oil drain plug.

if you follow the dip stick tube down to the base of the engine there is a square head bolt that is the drain plug

The main cause for your problem is a carburetor, the needle valve is not fully closing on the seat. This allows fuel to keep entering and overflowing out of the float bowl. The fuel only overflows when the tractor is not running. While it is sitting the fuel travels down the intake, and most of the time the intake valve stops partialy open and the fuel enters the cylinder. The fuel sits on the piston and slowly migrates past the piston rings and enters the crankcase. After a period of time, the oil level rises and then gets pumped up and out the breather tube.

If you trailer this piece of equipment, you might consider useing a fuel shut off. The bouncing causes the float to open and close, thus causing the same effect.

Briggs and stratton carburettor,does the float bowl chamber screw off

Depends what type of engine.

If it's a carb-on-the-tank mower engine, there is no float chamber in the conventional sense.

If it's a 'Quantum' type (carb on the side behind the air filter, then the float bowl is held on with a bolt (1/2" hex head).

Tractor engines (over 8HP) also have float type carbs.

sounds like the float needle valve is stuck open or it got lost as you were putting it back together. take onother look at it.

Briggs and Stratton fuel flow/vacuum fuel pump

A quick and simple fix is to place a hand squeeze primer bulb between the fule tank and the engine.
before attempting to start the engine. give it 2 or 3 squeezes to prime the float bowl. then start the engine like normal.
