You do not have the best version of Win7... you have the cheap one. If you had the fancy Win7 version of even any version of WinXP you could see your files, if the HDD is good. Ask a friend for assistance and plug the USB adapter into another PC. (I have my diagnostics PC with WinXP to avoid the issue.)

I installed a sata dvd drive in my dc5100 sff the boot order recognises it as an ide drive

i dont think it matter if your system detects it as sata or ide, both interface will work in installing OS, the important thing is you changed your boot order. originally it was supposed to boot in 1st drive whichever it is hard drive or dvd drive. go to bios then follow the instruction in how to move the order of boot sequence, mine is SHIFT key then PLUS.

Hp pavillion dv6915n - no hard drive detected

We do not say that the hard drive is damage maybe the IDE was faulty already. You may open your laptop and check the hard drive. Try to replace the IDE to check if the hard drive is good.

I have a toshiba portege M100 that does not seem to be able to find hard drive. IDE problem show, goes to main screen then goes no further. Can you help please

Boot the notebook to the BIOS.There must be some tab like a "diagnostics" or "tools". select it using the side arrow. It should allow us to take a hard drive self test.Id it displays an error "no IDE device found",exit the BIOS and turn off the notebook.Perform a hard reset followed by reseating the hard drive. If the issue persists contact the manufacturer. Its an isue with the hard drive connectors

Computer will only start in safe mode hp cue root and hp help and restore are not working? what is the best resolution? hard drive failure?

I have included some directions from HP about using an embedded Hard drive test. This is done using the BIOS. Try this to rule out a hard drive problem. This is supposed to also repair some hard drive issues. Then, we can go from there.

Brian

Perform a hard drive self test Many computer problems are related to soft failures on the hard drive. The comprehensive portion of the HP Hard Drive Self Test repairs soft errors on the hard drive, but does not report the errors. After the test completes, be sure to restart the computer to determine if the test repaired any problems you are experiencing with your computer. To use the HP Hard Drive Self Test, follow the steps below. NOTE: If the notebook computer is configured with two hard drives, then it may be necessary to test each drive separately.
  1. If the notebook computer is running solely on battery power, plug the AC adapter into the notebook.
  2. Shut down the computer if it is running.
  3. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
  4. Press f10 when the HP/Compaq logo displays.
  5. After the BIOS Setup Utility displays, use the Right Arrow key to select the Diagnostics menu.
  6. Select HDD Self-Test options .
  7. Press enter to display a list of HDD/Self-Test options.
  8. Select Notebook Hard Drive and then press f10 to display an Estimated test time .
  9. Press f10 to continue. The Hard Drive Self Test executes a Quick test , a Comprehensive test, and a SMART test.
If any test fails , contact HP for instructions on how to order a replacement hard drive. If all of the tests pass, the hard drive is not damaged. As a rule, HP does not replace a hard drive that is under warranty if it does not fail the HP Hard Drive Self Test.

Hard drive failure compaq presario 2200

If the bios is showing no ide, means that your ide hard drive is not being detected.
This can be caused by some motherboard failure, some bad cable connection or caddie connection or bad hard drive.

How to remove the hard drive for pavilion ze5000?

First and foremost be sure it is off and the battery is removed.

To remove the hard drive on the hp pavilion ze5000 turn the laptop upside down.
On the end of the laptop next to the lid release is the hard drive.
It is secured by three screws.
Two are in plain site remove them as well as the hidden one.
With the laptop upside down facing you there is a rubber stop directly above the hood release switch.
Pry it out with a precision, very small, flat blade screw driver. After the rubber piece is removed unscrew the screw that it was hiding.
With the three screws removed you should be able to pull/slide the hard drive out.
