Please check if you have the dvd writer in your laptop. If you only have a DVD-Combo drive in you system then you would only be able to read DVDs, you wouldnot be able to write DVDs.
You will see symbols like DVD-R and DVD-RW. If you have DVD-R then you will never be able to burn DVDs with the drive that you have, bur if you have DVD-RW then you will be able to write them.
Please let me know what type of drive you have.
Hope it Helps

You need to give me the make and model number of your laptop for me to verify if your laptop is capable of burn DVDs.

You may have what is called a combo drive...it can play and burn cds but can only play dvds, not burn them. Look at the face plate on the drive and see what is written on it. If it has the following: Recordable Drive = CD Burner DVD = DVD Player RW & DVD = DVD Burner
If recordable drive and DVD is on the drive but no RW, chances are its a combo drive. Keep us posted.
This could be a glitch with your burning software. Try removing and reinstalling it, or using a different software. The other possibility is the drive, occassionally with a CD/DVD combo drive the DVD reader or burner will fail, leaving the CD end working.
If you use the Nero Smart start, you should see an icon to switch from burning CDs to burning DVDs. Once you click this icon, you should be able to burn to DVDs.
