Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have an Acer 5633 that will not come out of hibernation. the on light comes on as does the led on the dvd drive and a fan runs for approx 5 seconds, then it just sits there like a plastic brick. I have tried taking the battery out and running it from the mains aadaptor only with the same results. There are no POST bleeps.

would that I could disable hibernation, The machine doesn't boot at all

  • barmysod Apr 21, 2008

The machine went into hibernation the awfully nice windows xp told me that.

  • barmysod Apr 21, 2008

I appear to have c..ked up and put this question in the pc desktop category, it is in fact a notebook, my appologies

  • barmysod Apr 21, 2008

Nothing appears on the screen at all and there is no power on self test. The power light comes on as does the dvd busy light, the fan runs for a few seconds and then goes off, the lights stay on.

Disable hibernation in the power settings. I've run across many computers that do not respond properly to hibernation mode, and that do the same thing. It's easier to simply disable hibernation mode and have it fall into sleep mode instead.

Well, if the machine is not booting at all, then it is not hibernation. It's a good chance that either your monitor is dead, or even the motherboard in the computer is dead. First, I would try a second monitor, borrow a friend's if you don't have one. If that doesn't work, then you definitely need to take it to a local repair shop, it's too serious for you to fix yourself.

I reread your initial response. You noted that you tried even with the battery out, unbfortunately most laptops will not run properly (or at all) if you try to run them plugged into AC without a battery in place.

Can you describe to me what happens when you power the system up, on the screen? Do you see anything at all?

OK, I was curious as to how XP told you that it was in hibernation when you cannot see anything on the screen, that confuses me a bit.

Narrowing it down, the three main things that I feel it could be are...

    • A bad or broken screen

    • A dead battery

    • A dead motherboard

I'm hoping that it's not the motherboard, but if it's not POSTing, then there's a pretty good chance that is the problem.

Sometimes a dead battery can cause this to happen, as I noted most laptops won't even boot without a working battery in place. From what I've seen, most laptop batteries only last about 5 years on average under regular use. If the battery was only holding a charge for 30 minutes or less before this happened to you, then chances are that you need to buy a new battery, or a refurb battery.

To see if the screen is bad, you could try connecting it to someone's computer monitor and booting up. In most cases, laptops will auto-switch to the external monitor and use that instead. If you see the screen on bootup when connected to a monitor, then you know the screen is dead. I just got a card the other day in the mail for laptop screen repairs, http://www.microreplay.com

Check/reseat monitor cables. If the fan and HDD are running, perhaps the power led is out. Check the monitor cable connections. Is the monitor plug into AC? Turned on? Shut down Desktop , unplug, reseat Graphics Card, if applicable, reboot.

My hp a6700f desktop has a problem with booting up or coming out of hibernation. It seems everytime it restarts it goes to sleep and I can not revive it. The fans come on and the DVD drive starts up but no...

You can turn off the hibernation in the power option control panel, but that may not be your problem, the power supply may be going bad, but I would turn off the hibernation first and see if that resolves your problem, if not get another power supply. I hope this helps. Good luck and have a nice day.

When I try to turn it on. The fan comes on and i think I hear the dvd drives motor make a slight sound. Then the fan continues to run but nothing else seems to be running (no lights or other sounds)

If it is under warranty then cantact to Authorised service centre. If you try to open the panel then the warranty will be void. So no need to experiment on it.

How do i tell if my acer computer has a bad power supply or motherboard, without buying a new power supply first?

The chicken and the egg comes to mind here!
Does the cpu fan come on? CPU 5 Volts is on
Can you open and close the DVD draw? 5 Volts is on
Does the Hard drive spin up? 12 Volts is on

Do the lights work on the keyboard? POST has completed.
Does the hard drive light work? CPU is on

Not sure what else to suggest but Power Supplies are not that expensive and fairly universal.

Hope that helped.

Cooling fan runs constantly coming off stand-by

Has it always done this or is this a recent problem?
Try this: right click on your desk top's start screen, select properties, select screen saver, select poweer, select hibernate. Make sure that hibernate is checked and select apply. Now when you hibernate your computer will remember all the info you were working on AND it should make the fan run normally on start up.
Not all computers have the hibernate feature and it cannot be added, so let's hope yours was built with it at the factory. Good luck!

My acer computer will turn on but wont come out of hibination mode

Some laptops have issues with Windows XPs hibernation mode. To get the computer back up again you should just hold the power button down until it shuts off completely. Some laptops won’t shut off even if you do this. When this happens you have to take the battery out to get it to turn off. Make sure it is not plugged into the wall when you do this otherwise it wont work.

Once you get the computer back running again you may want to disable hibernation if it seems like its going to keep happening. Go to Start, Settings Control Panel or Start, Control Panel and go to the Power Options icon. Change the hibernation section to never. You may want to try standby as an alternative. Standby saves all your running applications and documents into RAM while hibernate saves them to the hard drive. Hibernate uses less power from your battery, but it will take you considerably longer to get the computer back up. If you always plug the computer in then you may want to disable standby and hibernate since you really dint need them while plugged in.

Let me know if this works.
