Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

I have a smooth top range that has enamal edges. On two different occassions I have dropped a LIGHT ceramic salt shaker on the edge and chunks of the enamal have chipped out. I was told this is not covered under because its considered "use and wear"! Tell me why the enamal on a stove top range that gets heavy pots and pans used on it EVERY day cannot hold up to something as light as a salt shaker being dropped on it???

Just the angle of the hit, not the weight of the item, granted a very light wieght item is less likely to cause damage but a large spoon hitting at the proper angle can cause this i know i was the one that did it
time for the touchup paint

Is it okay to use glass whistler tea kettle on ceramic stove top range

I've seen mixed results across the internet on this one. From personal experience, for some reason, my glass teapot left some sort of stain on my ceramic stovetop. It also took longer to heat. I then went out and bought a simple metal one and have been pretty satisfied. If cosmetics are a concern, it's not too difficult a step to pour the water into your teapot after the fact, right?

How do you open the smooth top, on a Maytag range?

There will be 2 or 3 screws under the front edge of the top. Take them out and top will hinge up similar to the older models.
Unplugg the range before touching any wires. There is voltage on the thermal limiter on the element even when the switch is off.
Once you have access to the element you can check for power and continuity just like on an older range.
Post back with any questions. I will see if I have a manual on pdf.
Thanks/Mike

Counter top

electric or gas?
  1. Turn off gas supply - look for a valve in the cupboard under the unit - I had to trace my valve under the kitchen in the basement.
  2. Unplug electric ignition (or flip off circuit breaker if it's electric powered it'll probably have a dedicated circuit)
  3. you can now try turning on a burner - no sparks, sounds or heat, but you may smell a little gas. make sure you can't hear the gas when you turn the knob off and back on again.
  4. remove all grids and burner tops - let's make it as light as possible!
  5. The unit has a metal box casing, about 2" smaller on each side than the top itself. (quick sketch attached). The edges are not finished or smooth, so you might want to have a couple of strips of cardboard (or plywood scraps, or even an old towel) on hand to protect the counter surface when rest the unit on the countertop
  6. Try pushing a putty knife about an inch under the edge of the stovetop and running it around to free it from any "sticky" food etc. that may make it difficult to lift. I used on old serving spoon to lift the edge and get my (gloved) fingers under the edge. A cat's paw or an old chisel works too. My top weighs around 20 lbs. so if it feels "heavy", look for an obstruction.
  7. the whole top can lifted up but...
  8. when you lift it, don't pull up too far - just enough (6-8 inches) to slide it a little to one side so that the base of the unit can rest on the edge of the cutout. This way you don't pull on the gas line (probably a flex pipe).
  9. now you can see how to release the top from its casing. On
  10. my unit, there are 3/4 inch phillips head screws about an inch below the unit's top.
  11. just be careful when moving the unit while it's resting on your counter top - you don't want to leave scratches in the granite OWHY to show after the repair.
GOOD LUCK!

Hi, I have a wonderful Maytag speckled black smooth top stove. Over Christmas someone caused a big (2 " diameter) stain. I've tried everything to get it out. is it possible to have a new ceramic...

Ceramic cooktop cleaning tips - especially for 2-in difficult-to-remove stain:
Best Idea: "Cerama Bryte" + plastic scrubbie
Cerama Bryte is specifically designed for this cooktop, works on stains, avail at Hardware Stores.

Other ceramic cooktop tips:
1. "Soft Scrub" plasic scrubbie
2. Comet cleanser + sponge
3. Single-edge razor blade held at 45-degree angle - scrapes off material
4. "Cook Top" cleaner (WalMart) + Mr. Clean "Magic Eraser" abrasive pad
5. baking soda on damp sponge
6. soak stain for awhile with Formula 409, Fantastic, or citrus degreaser ("Orange Clean")
7. ammonia + water - in a 1:1 solution
8. Easy Off oven cleaner - it foams on the stain and does the work for you - let it sit 20 min.
9. the nuclear option:
Cerama Bryte under a plastic scrubbie under an orbital sander with sandpaper removed
(just the pad down on top of the scrubbie), after pre-soaking in Citrus Degreaser.
The sander is a power tool which only saves your joints, and speeds up the chore.

Shattered glass top for Hotpoint range/ how to replace

Hi there!

There are two basic types, Flush fitting and framed.

The framed versions are a bit like a picture frame, with the fixings around the edge and back. The flush ones rely on adhesives to the base edge around the plate, but may have a metal fixing frame attatched already.

Check the new plate you have to see if there are any keyhole shaped slots on a subframe (indicating a drop on, and push forward to lock arrangement) or if it looks different to the one that is broken.

The old saying - "If in doubt- ask" is true here, and you should telephone the manufacturer for any specific fitting instructions. You may need additional parts - fixing plates, screws, seals or adhesives, so I would advise calling their service department to ask if additional parts are required for fitting. They should be happy to supply them if needed.
This is not a cheap item, so don't risk poor fitting or damage by lack of correct parts.
