Sounds like its Duff. Did you try and take it out of the housing and install it directly into another pc vis sata or ide cable, if the problem is the interface circuit board, this may let you get your data off the HDD.

Is this a plug and play drive?

In most computers that are encountered, devices that are plugged into the USB ports are "plug & play" capable. There are numerous scenarios that can turn this function off inadvertantly such as a virus, data corruption or driver changes. In order to fix the issue and make an external device, such as a Western Digital Passport Elite hard drive "plug & play" capable, a user will have to make a few system changes. Click "Start" and "Run," then type gpedit.msc Click on "Administrative Templates," from the tree then click on the "System" folder. Double click on "Turn off Autoplay." Select the "Disabled" option and ensure it applies to all drives. Hope this helps,

Troubleshooting WD Passport 320 GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drives

If you plug your Western Digital Passport External USB 2.0 hard drive to a USB socket in your computer system, & the hard drive's light is on but there is no spinning sound, then you might be experiencing a defective interface circuitry.

These devices have a USB-to-SATA interface inside their enclosure. If you can find another enclosure with a similar interface (or buy a new enclosure), disassemble your hard disk enclosure, get the hard drive out & attach it to the interface in the other enclosure & see if it works.

Another possibility is that the interface could be fine, but the hard drive itself died. To test this possibility, try attaching the hard drive itself (after getting it out of its enclosure) directly to a PC. Since the hard drive is a SATA drive, you will be able to do this easily.

I am not able to connect my passport to my pc..lead light is steady n it showing in my pc like device is malfuctioned....wht to do ,,plz help asap

Try each of these methods step by step if solved in any step get backup ASAP
the good news is: if the LED is ON you may have a chance

1.Use Minimal cord, detach all other USB's, check your power2.Turn off power options3.Try Restarting your system4.Carefully Try system restore3.Download & update Firmware software from WD website4.You may need to Install SmartWare_Windows_Upgrader first5.In any step if the hard drive was recognized back up your data immediately6.if none of above You will need experts having PC3000 to get your data back
the bad news is that: if the LED is OFF or PC3000 doesn't recognize your hard drive you may need a new exactly the same hard drive with the same SN to replace it's board to get your data back.

unlike other brands which use laptop hard drives, that can be plugged into a PC directly, WD uses it's own board with access services on the hard and if the board is damaged you may have a serious problem.

this is a problem I have been through.
unfortunately the "lovely WD my passport" is Totally Not Reliable and you can not count on it.

My External USB 500 GB Western Digital Hard Drive doesn't seem to work anymore. I have it plugged in to its power supply. When I plug it into my computer via USB, it powers itself on. But it never shows up...

Hi, Have you tried it on another PC? Try it on another PC and see if is picked up on that one. If it runs on another PC, then you may have a driver problem with your USB ports, so these may need to be reinstalled.
Hope this helps.

When I connect WD 250 GB external harddisk ..I am getting error message" USB device Not recognized due to malfuction"..please guide me my laptop is toshiba and operating system is windows xp

Please trouble shoot by trying the device on another laptop.

If it works on another system, it simply means it is not compatible with yours and you have to get a device that is compatible with your toshiba system.

Good try.

My Western Digital 1TB hard drives do not power up when plugged into the USB Ports. No Blue light no nothing. I am however using the same power cable. I have changed the USB cable.

Seems like your case power is broken, check your warranty or buy a new one. to get your data back, open the case and unplug your harddriver, plug your driver in a PC computer and remove your important data.

You could also test a new power cable because it seems like your case doesent get any.
