Depends on the humdy in the air. The more hundy the more you will but check it every 4-6 hours. It should have an auto cut off when it fulls up.

The ice maker is dumping water on the floor and building ice in the despencer where you puy your glass

Usually when this starts happening the refrigerator inlet water valve need to be replaced. It is leaking water by the diaphram when the water is supposed to be off. I have seen this probably 100 times..... almost always is the inlet water valve.
You did not provide a model number so I can not provide you with a parts link,

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Ice maker will not make ice. no ice is being made. no water appears to be in ice cube making area. can hear a ticking noise from icemaker area

Carefully pour water from small glass into ice maker, until the cavity is near filled. Wait a few hours. If it dumps ice, you can usually rule out the ice maker.
If ice maker dumps, then it will be either a bad water valve, Ice building up in fill pipe going into the icemaker, or blocked water line that runs from your water source to the machine.
Caution. If the fill tube going into the ice maker is filled with ice do NOT
use heat such as a hair dryer to melt it. It will melt things you do not want to melt. If it is this problem, you must also replace the water valve because it is leaking slowly causing your problem.
Lastly, in rare cases, the microswitch in the ice maker fails and does not allow water to enter the icemaker.

Icemake rarely dumps ice and when it does they are small cubes

There has to be a restriction in the water supply line from your saddle valve, ( shut off valve on the cold water line ) to the water valve. It can be in the category of, the hole in the water supply line is getting calcium build up or to small of piercing, or it can be a kink in the water line, or even the white fill tube at the icemaker is closing up with ice. 99% sure you will find the problem in one of those areas.

If that unit has a steam valve I'd suggest checking it to ensure it's not stuck open. If it is, the steamer will not build pressure also. Should be a gauge for tank pressure that will show if it has built up pressure. If the valve is stuck open, it may certainly just dump water instead of steam. It's possible the water level sensors are allowing too much water into the tank, and as a safety it dumps. I've changed steam valves quite often due to the amount of heat they have to deal with.
