Major problem with mybook 500gb drive

Having major problems with my 500gb drive in which i can not see the drive letter on "My Computer".

Second, I attached the hard drive to my desktop and it hangs at the "blue screen" saying that the volume is dirty. I left it this way this morning while i am at work but it was doing the same thing last night just hanging...

I am trying to get the drive up and online long enough to copy the data off of it, if this is possible at this point...any help suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Sounds like the drive is damaged, possibly from a "gravity incident" or a good hard knock.

The volume being "dirty" can usually be fixed with a CHKDSK /F but if the drive is damaged, it is unlikely you'll get your data out of it.

If it is still under warranty, go to Western Digital's web site and submit a warranty replacement request.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

This drive has been misformatted. You will need to plug the drive into your windows computer. Hold down the windows key and tap the e key. In the window that appears, find the MyBook drive. Right click and choose format. Select the quick format box. Make sure file type is set to NTFS. Click "Format". This operation will however remove all data on the device.

My book problem

the disk label might be incorrect.

you know how you have c: and d:\ and maybe e: and F: drives?

in Windows XP you can set those letters.
if you had it in a mates PC, or your friend plugged their drive into your PC, the drive letters might get 'out of whack'.

to correct in Windows XP - Right click on My Computer - select Manage.

then go to Disk Management on the left panel.

find the usb drive there, right click on it, and select Change Drive letters and Paths.
change to a unused drive letter, and save these settings.

all going to plan, the disk should load as it normally would.

this is not just for this model of portable hard drive, this is for any USB drives, penstick/memory sticks included.

My WD MyBook 500GB drive is causing Windows XP to be self-retardant. (Slows)

Heres what you do.

Don't plug your external HD in while the computer is booting up. It's looking for Windows on your external hard drive. Hence the black screen.

Plug your USB or Firewire cable back in once Windows is finished booting up.

Mine does that sometime too.

How do you set up multiple WD Anywhere users on the network to share the same MyBook World Edition

hey,

-No WD Anywhere allows 5 users I think.
This could only be the solution, if you installed WD Anywhere on other PCs before

Check out the MioNet site, think they give options for new users.
if this is not the problem, I don't have a solution by now.

bye
