Each memory slot on the C555NR can support a maximum of 1GB of RAM. There are actually 2 slots, but only one is easily accessible to you. By upgrading both the primary and secondary DIMMs, you could achieve a total of 2GB of memory but you would have to remove the 512mb chip that is already installed and replace it with 1GB (+1GB in the expansion slot as well.)
If you don't plan on taking the computer to a professional to be serviced, you will probably only want to upgrade the memory in the secondary slot located under the memory cover on the underside of the computer. It can handle a 1GB SODIMM.
FYI the memory is: 200 Pin DDR2-533 PC2-4200 SODIMM

If you added another 512Mb RAM to increase the RAM to 1Gb then the new 512Mb memory stick could be incompatible with the original 512Mb or it could be faulty. Use RAM that is same make and speed as the original RAM. Remove both RAM and just insert the new 512Mb into your laptop and see if the laptop boots up, if not then the RAM could be faulty.
The best and quickest improvement is to add more RAM. Add another 512 Mb of RAM. If you already have a 512 Mb of RAM module then add another 512 Mb RAM module. If your laptop has 2X256 Mb RAM modules then you need to remove these and insert 2X512 Mb RAM modules.
The reason why you have 504 Mb RAM is that the video card has grabbed 8Mb of RAM off the main memory.
Hi, Memory Upgrade for Sony VAIO
PCG-K35 Laptop, the Sony VAIO PCG-K35 Laptop takes the PC2100 DDR SDRAM
SODIMMs Memory Type, and comes installed with 512 MB = 256 MB
(removable) + 256 MB (removable) of Memory. You can upgrade your
Sony VAIO PCG-K35 Laptop to up to a maximum of 1.0 GB Memory, the
system has 2 sockets to install Memory, already with 512 MB = 256 MB
(removable) + 256 MB (removable) standard Memory installed. For best
Laptop performance use the maximum amount of allowed Memory per slot
for your Laptop.
You can get it done at Bestbuy, but their very expensive. Take it to a small computer shop in your area, you'll get the same technical service at a much better price. Here at my shop, I can undercut the local Bestbuy by $100 every time. As far as the ram goes, 384 will run Vista, but it will be a little sluggish. Upgrading the ram will improve the performance of the machine and is always a good idea.
RAM - 512 MB (installed) upgradable upto 2 GB (max)DDR 2 SDRAM ( 1 x 512 MB ) that means your laptop has only 1 slot for memory.. ____________________________________________________ Was this solution helpful .Show your appreciation by rating it. dilipbagdi - Technical Associate
According to the specifications on the HP website the maximum RAM for your HP is 512MB and you are correct it only has one DIMM slot. So you're only alternative would be to buy a 1GB stick and insert it and try. It will not do any harm, but, you may lose some money because it will only operate at the spec given.
