Thinkpad 600E won't boot from disk - IBM ThinkPad 600E 2645 Notebook

This old stupid computer read-- after I ran a diagnostic from the easy setup screen---System Board error message-- Dev 001 Err 91 FRU 3610--I went online from my desktop and found that it's the battery and/or the motherboard or something to that effect. I ran another Diagnostic for the FRU and while in the easy set up I clicked on test then I pressed ctrl-- plus the A key and it ran the FRU diag---guess what? It read that the battery voltage was too high and that I have to replace the battery and/or motherboard--fa-get-a-bout-it--i'm throwing that computer away--I'm thinking about buying me one for my birthday in Octorer!

I had it working fine last night, it was just sitting in the corner for awhile minding it's own business but wanted to re-install the operating system because it was giving me error messages with the modem--I accidently installed windows XP on both partitions--i had no storage--so I wanted to delete one copy--I deleted one partition -that's when the problems began--oh well--live and learn!!

    thanks a million anyway

Set the boot order to boot from cd drive first, to enter the bios ...
With the unit powered off, hold the F1 key and power the unit on. Keep F1 held down until Easy setup appears.

Hi,

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.

IBM Thinkpad 600e (2645),error 189 and could not installing win98

Usually this means a hardware failure. I would suggest reseating the CMOS battery overnight to reset the system. Also you might want to replace it as well. It could also be more serious such as a motherboard component failure.
Also IBM error code # 189 according to Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PC's (8th edition) - "Excessive incorrect password attempts." Is there a password on your CMOS ?
Also try hitting ESC key on boot to bypass. Good luck!

Formatting IBM Thinkpad 600E

I know you can't boot from the Windows 98 CD, and probably not from Windows 2000 either. It is possible to turn the the Windows 98 bootable floppy into a bootable CD, but I think you would be much better of trying to install Linux.

How do I put new windows on the thinkpad I have got the cd

this is sometimes due to the boot sequence. identify the key to press so that you can access its bios at start up. a shot message is usually displayed for a short time at start up.
please go to the bios and change the boot sequence to start from HDD.

It is one of two items. You have a floppy disk in the unit or you have a bad hard drive.

Thinkpad 600E

IBM Thinkpad error code 19990301 is a Hard-Disk sector problem. Basically your hard-drive is faulty and you need to replace it. This is why it wont boot; because the area of the hard-drive that stores data is damaged.

ibm thinkpad does not boot My IBM Thinkpad 600 (Type 2645-310) stops and hang during bootup. What happens is: 1. LED test, then green Power on and orange battery/charging 3. RAM OK (Responds when I take out /put in different amount of RAM and displays correctly. I have 128 + 32 removable, + 32 internal not possible to take out) 2. I can hear fan, CD drive and evt diskette drive. If I use diskette drive the LED wil give 1 blink, if I use CD drive it will give 14 blink. 3. No cursor seen, but this is displayed: Upper left show the amount of RAM present: 196032 KB OK Upper right IBMs logo in blue; IBM Lower left shows "ThinkPad(R)" in large letters and red dot over "i". 4. Then a "rrrrrr" sound from the loudspeakers after a while, this is in fact 28 clicks shortly after each other. Then nothing more happens. Diskette and CD drive is OK (But can not be used because bootup is never finished). I hear CD speed up and then down again but nothing more happens. No effect in booting with bootable diskette or CD, "Live Linux" CD or else. Backup battery OK (3V) and if I take it out I will be asked for correct date and time when Power on. I can then use keyboard or TrackPoint to set date and time, and after that hangup at the usual point. Starting without battery, HDD, CD drive and removable memory sticks makes no difference in symptoms. Pressing and holding F1 before and during poweron and startup (in order to enter BIOS and selftest) has no effect. I could not find help on IBMs home page, but maybe I did not look at the right place. Is somebody able to help me?
