Question about GE GSS25JFPCC / GSS25JFPWW Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a GE side-by-side refrigerator/freezer that's not maintaining cold temperatures. I was told to replace the defrost thermostat which I did and it seemed to work for about a week or so. But now it's back to where it was. The attendant at the parts store told me that it probably wasn't the defrost thermostat, but was likely a bad mother board. He said the take off the mother board and if I saw a burn mark, it was bad. I have taken the mother board off and I don't see any burn marks. I hate to spend $150 or so on a new mother board if the problem is something else. How can I tell what the problem is? Thanks!

If the refrigerator isn’t cooling at all the motherboard is a good possibility burnt marks or not. If the fans are not running it could be a defective fan, motherboard or both. Take a look at this page http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/refrigerator-fan-motor.html

If the refrigerator isn’t defrosting properly, after a few days the freezer coils will get blocked out with heavy frost. There are four things that will cause this, defrost thermostat, defrost heater, evaporator thermistor and the motherboard. This page should help http://appliance-repair-it.com/GE-refrigerator-repair.html

Have a ge model # GTH21KBXAWW. The freezer works fine. The bottom half does not keep cold.

Freezer is cold but refrigerator is warm
  1. Evaporator coils are frosted over
If your issue is that the freezer is cold but the refrigerator is not as cold as it should be, the first step is to check the defrost system for problems. A key indicator in determining if perhaps you have a refrigeration defrost problem is visible frost on the evaporator coils. If your unit has frost you will need to check your defrost heater assembly, the defrost control, and the evaporator fan motor for a malfunction. Replace any erroneous parts as necessary.
  1. Damper
If your issue is that the freezer is cold but the refrigerator is not as cold as it should be, the damper door could be broken or jammed. The damper is a door that opens and closes to allow cool air to flow from the freezer into the refrigerator unit, and if it fails to operate correctly, not enough cold air will enter the refrigerator to keep it cold. The damper can be replaced if it is no longer operating properly.
  1. Thermistor
If your issue is that the freezer is cold but the refrigerator is not as cold as it should be, the thermistor connected to the control board might be defective. The thermistor is a sensor that examines the temperature inside the unit. If the part is defective, the refrigerator could not cool properly.
  1. Temperature control board
If your issue is that the freezer is cold but the refrigerator is not as cold as it should be, the temperature control board could be at fault. The temperature control board distributes voltage to the fan motors and compressor to keep them functioning. This board is very often misdiagnosed as the culpable cause and it is recommended to proceed with the troubleshooting process of elimination prior to replacing this part.
  1. Defrost thermostat
Another issue that can cause your freezer to be cold while the refrigerator is not as cold as it should be is the defrost thermostat. In order for the defrost heater to activate to melt away any excessive frosting on the evaporator coils, the defrost thermostat must sense that the temperature is cold enough to activate the defrost heater. Without this continuous cycle, the frost will excessively build up on the coils and prevent proper air flow inside the unit. The defrost thermostat can be checked for continuity with an ohm meter; if it's not present, the thermostat will need to be replaced.
  1. Main control board
A possible cause for a freezer that's cold but refrigerator that's not as cold as it should be is the main control board. The main control board acts as a "brain" for the unit, controlling the defrost cycle, compressor, and run time. However, it is an uncommon cause for this issue. This board is very often misdiagnosed as the culpable cause and it is recommended to proceed with the troubleshooting process of elimination prior to replacing this part.

My GE 2008 side by side , the freezer is working but the food storage is not help ?

one of 2 things can be wrong,#1) if theres a heavy frost buildup on the rear inside wall of the freezer compartment then its a defrost issue, which will block air flow to the refrigerator side, take off back panel and test defrost heater and thermostat both on evaporator coil for continuity, thermostat has to be below 32 degrees to test good, most of the time its the hearter on G.E.. #2)if no frost buildup, then check the damper vent door between the freezer and refrigerator compartments and make sure its not stuck or broken shut and can no longer open and close to keep temperatures in refrigerator cold

Freezer won't maintain temperature any lower than 16-18

It appears that your refrigerator is missing defrost. It will be difficult for anyone to provide photos of your defrost heater. I recommend that you unplug long enough to allow defrost to begin manually so we can get freezer door open and remove frozen goods long enough to place somewhere safe until we examine the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. At this point the only pictures will be the ones you email me. This appears to be a new breed of Profile from GE. If you would like to attempt this please let me know. The defrost heater is part number WR50X10043 but that means nothing until we do some testing, Let me Know, Sea Breeze

Good day,
That's too long a period, for a normal. defrost system failure.
You'll have to wait until it quits, then remove the rear panel and look for ice (not frost) building up somewhere in the freezer compartment.
I have solved similar problems on this model, by replacing the defrost thermostat with a GE 60 degree thermostat, and a WR9X330 GE 6 hour defrost timer to get this model to defrost completely.

It's also possible that the refrigerant charge is slightly low, causing the defrost thermostat not to reach a cold enough temperature to perform a good defrost cycle. (building ice over a long period of time).

Make sure Freon 12 was used when replacing the compressor.
Some substitutes caused the evaporator coil to act as if it was
slightly low on charge.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

GE side by side GSS20IEP Refrigerator freezer freezing

this is a problem that is no stranger to most GE side by sides; GE has used a glass type defrost heater in the freezer which often fails. If you manually defrost your appliance (unplug and leave doors open for 24 hrs) then plug back in, it will appear to work normally for a few days and gradually build up frost on the evap panel (back panel in the freezer) and eventually the refrigerator side will seem to loose cooling due to frosted damper, or lack of cold air transfer over the evap coil. The fix for this is to replace the defrost heaters (s). While not as common, defrost thermostats can open causing the unit to skip defrost, and even less likely is the defrost control (either mechanical timer or adaptive defrost). First, defrost your appliance, then remove the evap panel and ohm out the heater(s), if open, replace. If they check ok, check your defrost thermostat (small disc like object attached by a clip on the evap. coil itself) for signs of popping open or open ohm readings at normally closed temperatures. Its a good idea to change this anyway when replacing defrost heaters as the two work hand in hand. Last, check the defrost timer by manually advancing the screw advance clockwise until you hear the first click, then check voltage to the defrost heater and thermostat, if no voltage present replace timer. If your appliance is equipped with a adaptive defrost board, refer to the schematic for proper diagnostics.

GE Model TFX25KRCGWW there is frost in the freezer and it appears the temperature in the freezer and refrigerator is not cold.

Just went throught he same thing. The evaporator coils ( the ones in the freezer section) have defrost heaters that cycle occasionally to keep them frost free and they are not working. It could be the defrost thermostat, defrost timer, or the heater elements. The timer is the first thing to check followed by the thermostat and then the heater elements.
