This problem is usually caused by the software encryption you are using. Depending on the age of your computer and the operating system you are using, it may not support all available encryption software. Some people have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption
To find out if that's the problem first turn off the encryption software in your router and see if you can access the internet. If this works then you know the its the encryption. However you really don't want to keep your router wide open so find out what kind of wireless adapter your computer has (intel, netgear, etc...) by looking in your device manager then go to the manufacturer's web page and download the latest drivers you may also be able to do this through windows update. There may be a wireless connection agent software that you can replace the windows connection agent with. This will allow more encryption software availability. Also depending on the age of the router its a good idea to upgrade the firmware on the router.
Good Luck

Turn the modem off.
Turn the router off.
Turn your computer off.
Connect the modem to the router.
Connect the router to your computer.
Turn the modem on, and wait 60 seconds.
Turn the router on, and wait 60 seconds.
Turn the computer on, and try to access 'www.google.com'.
If it works, then the power-off/power-on cycle of the modem was the "trick" to make everything work.

I'm unsure of the exact part number here but using the model number I checked the manual. This looks like it's just an access point which extends a current network you have. If you only have your laptop, this device and your internet modem it may not give you the wireless connectivity you're looking for. On a normal setup you would plug your modem into a router, plug your laptop into the router and set it up with all your DSL/Cable connection information as well as wireless on/off. You can then unplug from the router and continue life. with this one it's only connecting to an existing setup (another router or another wireless network) and extending it.
If you are looking for a solution to give you a router that connects to your modem and gives you wireless or adding multiple devices on a single connection I would recommend returning this and getting an all-in-one router such as this: http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Routers/Linksys-E1000-Wirelessn-router_stcVVproductId97826160VVcatId551966VVviewprod.htm?icid=linksys-specs-e1000-learnmore-btn&src2=linksys-specs-e1000-learnmore-btn

Hi Support team, I use Modem Motorola SB100 with Linksys WAP54G, and DLink Wireless G DWA USB Adapter to connect to Linksys WAP from my PCDesktop. Connection from the PC to Linksys is ok but can't...

peter_picasa:

You cannot use a Wireless Access Point (WAP) to connect directly to your IPS's modem. A WAP does not provide the ability to share a single IP address on the internet like a router does.

Either return the WAP for a refund and buy a wireless router or buy an Ethernet wired-only router and plug the WAP into the LAN side of that router. You would then plug the WAN side of the Ethernet wired router into your modem.

Thanks for using FixYa.

here are times when there is a need to connect a wired computer to an access point in order to set it up. To connect a wired PC to a Linksys access point, follow the steps below. Step 1:
Connect the PC to the Ethernet port located at the back of the access point.

Step 2:
Assign a static IP address on the computer. For instructions, click here.
NOTE: To assign a static IP address using Mac, click here.
The Access Point can be configured in four different modes:
  • Access Point
  • Access Point Client
  • Wireless Repeater
  • Wireless Bridge
The Access Point mode allows wireless clients to connect to the access point and routes traffic between the wireless and wired interface. Use this mode to create a standard wireless Infrastructure network. For instructions, click here.
The Access Point Client mode allows this device to act as a wireless client. You can connect a wired PC to the access point to connect to a wireless router or another access point wirelessly. You can enter the MAC address of the Access Point or use the Site Survey button to select the Access Point you want to connect.
NOTE: The WAP54G will only communicate with another WAP54G when set to the Access Point Client. For instructions, click here.

Linksys modem is being a pain in the *** cannot get internet

OK step at a time. Is the modem plugged into the correct place on the router. There should be 4 or 5 slots that are grouped together or appear separated from one particular slot on the router? Sounds to me like you are reaching the router but not getting internet access??? Does your laptop show being on a network with the Linksys? Make sure you have the router wired correctly. SETTING WIRELESS

1. Shut off the power to your cable or dsl modem for about 30 minutes.

2. Connect the ethernet cable from your modem to the Internet port on the router.

3. After 30 minute power on ONLY the modem NOT the router

4. Wait about 60 seconds and power on the router

Try it now.

I have a WCG200 linksys but can not go onto internet.

from what i have read, your router is broadcasting a signal, and your modem has an open and active internet gateway.

pls make sure that the connection from the modem to the router are correct. the modem should be connected in the port with the label internet. you may have to reset your modem AFTER you have connected the wireless router to allow the router to be assigned an ip. now with the wireless router and broadband modem connected, you can connect to the network and access the internet. pls repost if you hit any snags
GOOD LUCK and PLS rate this post.
