Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

Hi diddydoddy, further to my prob with banging in drum of whirlpool front loader AWM 5100, I am wondering if the clip which holds the element is absolutely necessary? It is simply a piece of hardened bent wire. one edge had somehow bent out of shape and was hitting the folded seam of the metal inner barrel each time it rotated. I don't understand how this could have happened, and since I had to completely disassemble the machine to reach it, I would hate to find it somehow bends out again. It was very difficult to reshape back into the correct shape, and is still very slightly lopsided. The element appears to be very securely in place, so does the clip actually do anything? What do you think? Many thanks, Handichick

I pay to use this site to get help, you have been rude and condescending. I have explained all of my questions very clearly to make sure the parts and problem were very clear to the 'expert' helping me. I asked for some clarification to make sure and you are even ruder. Why did you even bother?

Hi, the clip is very important concerning the element and since you say it's bent out of shape, then you have to replace it or else you will start having problem with element because the clip helps hold the panel.

I think maybe the Australian model 5100 I have varies. There is no separate panel for the heating element, it is built into the plastic tub, mounted directly in the front below the opening. This wire clip is simply pushed into the plastic of the rim near the seal and guides the element as it is assembled. It has no operational wiring or conection to anything but the plastic tub, and the middle of the "M" shaped element. I suspect this may be different in the 5125. Whirlpool website does not have either model!

Are you sure it is functionally important? What does it do?

Well if you insist that it isn't because of the it's model type then you can go ahead and do without it...

Your solution suggested that the clip held in a panel involving the element. My machine does not have this. It may be that the Australian model I have is different, as I suggested before. The plastic barrel is only in two pieces with the bearing assembly and the element mounted directly in the barrel. I cannot see any way for the metal tub to move enough to hit the element, and if it does so, this little clip hardly seems up to the task of protecting it. What is supposed to be the function of this clip? Stabilisation? Please explain this more thoroughly for me. Thanks.

Hi,

Yes that element is necessary . If you donot put the this going forward you might get a rumbling noise which would be irritating and will put pressure on the belt.

Let us know if you have something more to know else accept the suggestion.

Yes you are exactly right, these bearings have failed & are causing the noise very common problem with whirlpool front loaders. very expensive to repair worth while looking into replacing instead of repairing as it will just happen again. The new LG machines are the best in my opinion.

If you are talking about the drain pump strainer, you need to remove the lower front panel. should be 3 screws on the bottom facing forward. Once you have that off, the pump strainer is almost in the center, facing you. unscrew it counterclockwise to remove.

Leaking water from a whirlpool AWM - 293 front loader

I too have this model machine. The leak in my case traced to the fill up hose that attaches to the drum. The seal at this point seems to be a weak point and requires either a replacement that will only last another couple of years or you could try what I did.

I removed the rubber hose from the drum. Dried and cleaned it thoroughly. placed a fair bit of sealant (silcone) on both parts and reassembled and let sit for a couple of days till it cured. This will need to be redone in about 3 years (that is my average- have owned it for 10years).

I had same problem twice, the first time there was a sock in the filter at the front adjoining the pump, the second time a sock had got in the pipe under the drum which is more awkward to get to but is possible if you have the tools to remove the back plate and are ok at diy, there is a spring tension clip on the pipe which comes off quite easily with a pair of pliers.
