Make sure power adapter is still working .Try it in different outlet then connect it to harddrive if harddrive show the power led then power adapter is fine. But if it not show power then change power adapter or check it in nearest computer shop. They have it's power adapter.
But if it is not on then you need to take it to nearest hardrive service center.
If harddrive show power then try below if your computer does not recognize it.
First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
then check.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
If your harddrive still not recognized then you need to repair your harddrive.Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer then your harddrive has internal issue.

Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa

Turntable turns anticlockwise

If the deck connects to a hif-fi system that powers the motor then the plug has been inserted in incorrectly.
If it has it's own power supply then either the belt is fitted wrong. Somebody trying to repair it has fitted the motor connection wrong or in the case of a direct drive model a fault has happened causing the motor to go into reverse.

I have pluged in the usb plug and plug the maxtor to the electrical plug but nothimg happens. How do I get it going?

Take a multi-meter, and test the voltage and amperage outputs from the power-supply, to confirm that the readings match the specifications on the label on the power-supply.

If the power-readings are correct, then when you connect the power to the external enclosure, you should either hear the disk-drive start to spin, or feel the vibrations as the disk-drive spins.
If you don't, then the disk-drive inside the enclosure has "died".

If the device is still under warranty, MAXTOR will replace the disk-drive, for minimal costs to you.

If the warranty has ended, then open the enclosure, remove the disk-drive, purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, install it into the enclosure, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

Compaq presarios s5500uk wont boot up fitted new motherboard, pentium e5200 processor. existing hard drive ide seagate barracuda 7200.7 120 gbytes os windows xp

check the power supply: unplug the main connector from the motherboard, plug in the ac/mains power cord and switch on the on/off switch if any located on the power supply, locate the GREEN wire on the main connector that plugs on the motherboard, using a small length of wire insert one end into the plug where the GREEN wire is located and the other end into a BLACK wire on the connector. the power supply should power on if it is good: you will see and hear the fan turn on in the power supply. if it is good remove the wire and re-plug it.if it is not good replace the power supply. also check that the 110/220vac swithch is in the correct position for your mains voltage.do you have a floppy drive connected to the system? if so un-plug it and try again,re-check that you pluged the power button switch connector on the mainboard correctly,

Wrong power supply was plugged in...won't power up...is there a reset?

No there isn't a reset.
If you plugged in the wrong power supply then you could have damaged the electronics, especially if it was the wrong polarity and/or a voltage that was too high for the hard drive.

I think I fried my LACIE 500gb drive

Sadly if you fried the drive with that PSU cord it would be pretty hard for a home repair. If you know its definatly dead, I would just remove the drive from the external unit and try to connect it internally to a computer. If the adaptor is different you could buy a cheapy online somewhere.
