I did not store the mower. I just purchased it used from another party. It started and ran a while and I drove it while purchasing. Now i got it home, unloaded and it wont start. It backfires. I changed the plug, gapped 0.030, battery, gasoline, new gas added. The guy said he changed out a push rod. When you crank it, it rotates bad. Not even spins. He said it always did that. One guy told me i got another bent valve rod, and sheared flywheel.

Briggs and Stratton engines are very good in general. Did you store it over the winter and are just now trying to start it?

Troubleshooting Points from their manual:

Engine out of fuel, engine not choked properly, engine flooded, Bad Spark Plug, Dirty Air Filter, Dirty Fuel Filter, Water in Fuel, Loose or Damaged Wiring, Carburetor out of Adjustment, Engine Valves Out of Adjustment.

Did it work last year?

Hello, kindly check if the fuel tank has enough fuel because this can also prevents it to start.

If your lawnmower won't start, you hear a clicking sound and you've checked all the usual suspects by insuring that the battery is fully charged and will provide the starting load, the spark plug is connected and non of the safety devices like having the machine in gear or the blades engaged are causing the problem, the next place to check is the solenoid. The solenoid is usually easily accessible and is an electromagnetic switch that engages when you energize the ignition - by turning the key to the start position

If you lift the engine cowling and look to the rear of the engine you will see the solenoid. The positive (red) and negative (black) battery wires will be attached to it at heavy posts as well as some other electrical wires connected to smaller posts. First try gently tapping it with a rubber mallet. Sometimes this electromagnetically activated switch gets stuck. If that doesn't work, you can try jumping the solenoid switch. The safest way is to take your battery jumper cables and using just one of the jumper wires, connect one side to the negative post (black) on the solenoid and then touch the other side to the positive post (red) of the solenoid. Make sure your key is in the on position and the lawn mower is otherwise ready to start. Be careful that the jumper wires do not become tangled as the engine starts. Also, someone sitting in the seat to prevent any mishap is the recommended and safest procedure.
wish you good luck,

take care.

hello, the following should be checked to put your ridind mower in it's supposed functional position,
1.water i the gas, It goes to the bottom of the tank, and the bottom of the
carb - where the engine picks up gas. Drain the carb and dry the
tank if you find water in the carb
2.you might hit something and this will make the motor not to start,it is the flywheel key
    3. it could easily be the air filter,or probably that the gas has gone bad.
you can as well visit the site below for a comprehensive instruction and diagram on your riding mower repairs.

    take care.

Motor quit put new gas, charged battery, checked oil still does not turn over- prior to this the engine would backfire prior to starting- I have checked connections-

Does not turn over or does not start? Does not turn over usually means a bad battery or starter. Or connections which you have already checked. There may be a fuse block or inline fuse as well. Does it have a manual pull start as well? Does this turn over the engine or is it siezed up, low/no oil.
Turns over but does not fire usually is spark or the fuel. Back firing would guess spark plug or carberator (air fuel mixture) If it turns over but does not fire, try putting in some Seafoam fuel system cleaner. This will get the varnish-gunking stuff out of the carb. Mix in your tank, turn over quite a bit to get it pulled into your carb bowl and into some of the carb port holes. Let it soak a while and then turn over again every so often to pull in new cleaner. If it starts at some point it will stink a little while burning the cleaner in the tank.

Make sure you have check the old fuel lines and and air vacuum lines for pin holes and cracks as well. Change the plugs. Make sure the air filter is clean. Change the fuel filter. Does it fire if you shoot starter fluid in the carb air intake, this would suggest a fuel issue, such as dirty carb, bad fuel line or fuel filter, or fuel pump.

Have a Briggs and Stratten 4.0hp Lawnmower that starts but sputters. What can I do to get it running smooth...What is the Spark Plug GAP?

How old is the fuel? Drain old fuel, use premium fuel and change spark plug and maybe air filter. I start mine in the Spring using quickstart. It also starts and dies a few times and eventually keep running. Winterizing the machine in the Fall prevents most starting problems in the Spring. If this does not solve the problem, see a mechanic.

Toro ride on wont start

Battery required? Charge battery or replace. Replace air filter and spark plug. Dump out old oil and replace with 30w oil. Electric start may have a fuse blown. Dump out old gas fill with new with Stabile always added to gas. Try spraying starter spray in carb at air cleaner with filter removed. All mowers have a low oil sensor to prevent starting on low oil. Remove bowl from carb, should be full of gas. Pinch off fuel line with pliers or turn fuel valve off. Check float should be hanging down allowing fuel flow. Float up stops fuel flow.

Replace fuel filter after cleaning tank thouroughly, to clean tank remove fuel line at carb. Drain all fuel then leave line loose until you flush tank with carb. Cleaner then blow out tank with compressed air. Now install new fuel filter and check your fuel can for trash and water better yet just add fresh fuel.

Tractor wont start

For a small gas engine than won't start, think FAST -- Fuel, Air, Spark, Timing. You've replaced the filters and spark plugs and squirted in some starter fluid, eliminating the simple common fuel, air, and spark problems -- but I because of the backfiring I think your problem is in the timing -- like a sticking valve. Probably more than you want to tackle at home, but might not be as expensive as an engine replacement. Take it to a good small engine mechanic -- best bet is a lawn equipment shop that has been around many years. Drive a little farther to get to one if necessary.

First, take the air filter off and spray a shot of carb cleaner/ starting fluid in the carb. If it starts for a second and runs on the prime then its a fuel issue. Check fuel filter, fuel delivery, and carb.

New battery re-charged but still wont fire

Check for spark
If yes, it is getting FIRE, just needs AIR and FUEL

Give it a 5-second shot or two of Starting Fluid (Ether) through the Air intake (filter) and try to start

Does it kick and run really fast and then stop?

If not, pull the plug, clean and check for GAP of 2-3 matchbook covers. Retry. Does it run (or try to)?

If it does, Now we have to look at Clogged air or fuel filter or water in line(s)

Remove air filter. Try ether again. If it starts and runs, replace or clean air filter. Done!

If not... Replace AIR filter and Drain fuel into metal or Glass jug, take off fuel filter, open and drain fuel bowl. Replace fuel filter, refill tank, prime, give it a shot of ether and try again. If it runs, Done!

If it still will not stay running, but you can coax it by giving it a blast every 5-10sec, it could be linkage, stuck choke, throttle plate or jets. Give carb a good cleaning, check throttle plate (in carb throat between it and Air Cleaner) and.check Choke. Try again.

If it still will not run, take to mower mechanic.
