USB Connector I need a replacement USB connector for the Compaq Armada E500 laptop. From where can I obtain one?

Although it isn't a fix for replacing the damaged USB connector of my Compaq E500, I was able to come up with a method for connecting external USB devices to the E500 without the use of a USB connector. I obtained a USB-To-Serial adapter. The hard part was finding an adapter with a 9-pin FEMALE serial connection. Microsoft makes one for a USB mouse to operate through a DB9 serial connection. I obtained mine on eBay for only $2.00 (plus shipping).

That or you could also try discount electronic stores for a usb PCMCI card to add in, then you have the added bonus of USB 2.0

Compaq Armada E500 is working, but display is so dark, I need a flashlight to see the display to navigate. ideas please?

Backlight or the inventer is gone, check www.pchub.com for parts. I got one of these laptops for around 20usd, it may not be worth the repair. You can also use a external display, the laptop has a VGA - for a desktop display connector and a tv connector aswell.

VGA- blue connector 3 lines of pins on the back.
TV connector, yellow, round connector on the right side.

Compaq Armada E500 PC Notebook usb port problem

If the usb connector / port is only damaged it should be a fairly easy task.

Your going to need a few screwdrivers to get the laptop open
and a soldering iron, to remove the port or ports connector(s)
from the motherboard then replace it with a new connector.
if the motherboard is damaged you would most likely have to replace the whole motherboard and that would be way too much money for a few usb ports.

the usb connector only has 4 pins

Compaq Armada e500 won?t recognize the cd drive

Simple things first: Assuming the CD drive is removable, remove it from the laptop then re-iinsert it making sure it's pushed home properly so that the connectors seat properly.

If, again, the drive is in a bay (i.e. it's removable) then it may be the connectors are worn/damaged. If it's the drive connector then it may be repairable or you might pick up another drive, perhaps on eBay. It may also be that the drive has simply given up the ghost - so back to eBay :) If the connectors on the laptop have got damaged then you're looking at dismantling the laptop to repair/replace them, if that's possible.

If it's an external drive then the advice is very similar - check out the connectors first. If they look OK then you probably have to suspect the drive itself.

For either type of drive, there is always the small chance that the IDE controller channel on the motherboard has died - I have seen this happen in rare cases. Your options then are a bit limited. IIRC, that PC has no USB2 and even if it did, it wouldn't boot from a USB CD. You can get a PCMCIA interface card (now called simply PC interface) for an external CD. Depending on the card-drive interface, you might be able to boot from that.

If you need to install software onto the machine & have another (desktop) PC to hand: remove the disc from the E500, get a 2 1/2 to 3 1/2" disc adapter & temporarily attach the drive to the desktop as a secondary (i.e. not boot) disc. You can then load software onto the drive although you can't do a Windows install that way. If the machine already has an old version of windows on it, you can copy for example, the XP install files onto the drive, put it back in the machine & run an upgrade. Not the most desirable result but may be OK.

Compaq Armada Serial Port Broken

Do you really need the serial port? You should be able to find a USB to serial converter fairly cheaply.

Boot up failure

Fixed disc is refering to your hardrive and the fact that it has been unable to read a bad sector on your hard drive, that sector probably being where the boot.ini file resides. You will have to get the drive checked out, by means of an 2.5" ide to usb powered connector, which will connect to another pc's usb port to enable you to perform a disk check and a repair if possible of the bad sectors, or take to a local repairer where they should have the required adapters.
