The only speaker "configuration" is hooking up red (+) wire of speaker to same on amp/recv. This applies to (--) wire as well

Plays only mono when listening to music

I lot could depend on how the music source has been connected to the receiver. If you are using a stereo CD player then you may need to check if it is configured to send audio in stereo mode and not mono. The input source selection for the audio is given in page 26 of the manual.
You can go to the setting menu in Receiver and configure the speakers settings according to which ones you have installed.
Also refer page 25 in the manual to over ride speaker configuration if it is not showing correct.

No surround sound

Review the speaker set up instructions to determine whether the correct sizes have been selected. In some speaker configurations, signals are mixed or redirected to compensate for size limitations and other factors.

We have our subwoofer hooked up to our Denon AVR-787, but not getting any sound from it. I'm sure it's some knob we need to turn or button to push.... All other speakers are working Help?! We're not...

press setup/configuration on your remote you'll get configuration menu, then goto 'speaker configuration' check if the subwoofer is on, check that front speakers and others are set as small. There also could be subwoofer mode settings, remember current setting and try to change it.

Speaker set up question

I generally only use 2 tower speakers but the extra 2 could be used for rear or surround speakers. Set up your home theatre like a box. Use 2 towers at the front on either side of the TV. Your surround speakers should be in the middle ground (if your couch is in the center of the room, that means to the left and to the right of your couch). Your rear speakers should be similar to your front speakers, just behind you or a little off to the side. These inputs are clearly labelled on the back which is handy. The only thing you're missing is the center speaker, which goes right under the TV. I recommend getting one because this is the speaker that outputs most of the sound for speaking. The 606 has a really handy mic setup program, which I recommend using (it configures the volume for each speaker based on the distance from your seated position). I hope that helps you out!

Do you have all 5+1 speakers connected? You need to go to the Setup menu of yamaha and set which speakers you have and which you don't. For example if you don't have the Center speaker connected, receiver will redirect and mix the sound to the other speakers.
Blue-ray film over HDMI should automatically output via all your configured speakers (nothing to be configured).

Config Problems After Repair

Sounds like they centre has configured your speakers to "none". You need to hook it up to a tV or monitor and go through the menu to "speaker settings" and make sure you select either "sml" or "lrg" for the speaker type. Also ensure on the LFE settings that you select either "swoofr" or "both."

No sound back two speakers

After using the method of last resort (RTFM) I discovered that Yamaha 7.1 amps assign an order of priority to the speakers. The surround speakers have higher priority than the surround-back speakers. I had connected the rear speakers (in a 5.1 configuration) to the surround-back speaker terminals and since nothing was connected to the surround terminals the E-6 error happed on auto-setup.

I eventually fixed this by connecting the rear speakers to the Surround L/R terminals and then, via the manual setup menu, set rear surround = NONE. This causes the amp to route the rear-surround signals to the Surround L/R terminals. The auto-configure then completed successfully.
