the pilot light goes out as soon as you let off the button. i held it for 1 minute- 2 minutes and 3 minutes and it went off as soon as i let off of it each time.
    Thanks

Again thanks so much. You were right on the money and your link to the manual made it easy to FIX the problem. Your advice awhile back about an E4OD transmission was right also.

It has a hot surface ignition.the hot surface ignites if the blower is exhausting. The hot surface will go out if the flame sensor isn't detecting flame.Besides all this that water heater has a 6 year warranty. If its a old heater and you just put in a new thermo couple.the problem is still the flame sensor. If you scratch the scale off the flame sensor and thermocouple with a knife its ok,don't sand with sandpaper etc.If thermocouple is not replaced then check the thermocouple too. -------- if still you want to confirm what is the exact fault.before replacing any part. Its advisable that you get each part checked mentioned as per service manual. In owners manual there is nothing listed about checking the internal part .But in service manual all procedure is mentioned in detail. to get service manual.Just click on the link below. http://www.bradfordwhite.com/images/shared/pdfs/manuals/44943A.pdf check as per service manual.----------------------- Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Your gas control valve is bad and needs to be replaced more than likely.

When the unit calls for heat watch to make sure that the pilot light gets larger. If it does then the pilot circuit is OK. You could have a bad thermal valve but more than likely the main gas valve is defective.

After the pilot light gets larger count to 5 and if the main gas valve does not turn on the main gas valve/control box is bad and needs repalced. If you are not sure of the procedure you should hire a competent technician to replace the unit.

Let me know if you need more help. Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating!!!!!

Check pilot flame is it good, is the thermocouple in the flame, is the flue causing a down draft, or to much updraft, Is the ceiling in your closet close to flue to keep a downdraft out. Last replace gas valve.

How do I light my hot water heater?

It is pretty easy - make sure gas valve is open, change control know to pilot. Press the ignitor a few times and once pilot lights up switch control to warm or hot position.

1) Copy following links to identify gas control valve and read ignition procedure, and access service manual for your product:

Bradford-white water heater wont heat water.the blower motor hums but wont blow.also, pilot light wont light,is this just a safety feature?

Water heater is not identified and gas valve is not known.
Review options below:

1) Add a comment and describe what gas control valve is on the water heater, and model number from label on side of unit. Include what you have tried so far.

2) Try unplugging water heater and see if water heater resets.
Disconnect blower from gas valve, then plug blower in to see it it operates.
This will eliminate or include blower as suspect.

3) Open following link to download service and product manuals to help troubleshoot exact model.
