Assuming you have a MANUAL (IE non-hydro) transmission ....

Can you shift with the engine OFF? If so, the problem is a dragging dirve belt transmitting power even though the clutch pedal is depressed. Check the adjustment, and that you have FULL travel on the pedal.

If you CAN'T shift with the engine off, then either the linkage is jammed/stiff, or there's an internal trans fault.

If you DO have a hydro trans, disconnect the linkage at the trans and attempt to move the lever on the side of the trans with vise-grips or similar. If you can move it without much effort, the linkage is siezed, if not, then internal trans fault.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the info. I thought it might be in the trans. but I was hoping there was a way to check the fluid. I can't find a plug or filler cap. And no, I don't have the manual. Vince"

I have the same mower. A bunch of these transmissions seize up and rather than tear down the transmission I drilled a small hole in the transmission case and installed a self tapping screw to reseal it. I put as much gear lube in it as I could get it to hold. I have heard of other people installing a zert and filling the case with wheel bearing grease. I tilted it forward and worked the shifting lever back and forth many times until it started to loosen a bit. I have been using it for the past three years with no problems.

have you removed a rear tire recently? If so, you may have pushed the square key that locks the rim to the axle out

Gear shift lever is loose and mower will not move. this is on a craftsman lt1000.

Trace back the linkage from the shift lever to the transaxle to see if the linkage has come apart. If it is a manual, then I know the linkage connects to the transaxle on the top, forward, left of center. There is a retaining bolt (i think bolt, been a long time) that attaches the linkage to the transaxle. If this has backed out very much the linkage is not going to shift gears on the transaxle.

I hope this helps.
