Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a 1997 kenworth truck. The airconditioner compressor clutch will slip sometimes when I first turn it on. I have just replaced the compressor and clutch for this problem. Evacuated the system and filled with the proper amount of freon and refridgerant oil. Worked good for about two weeks and then started doing the same thing again. If I try starting the A/C two or three times it will start.

You have a low voltage problem to the ac clutch, check the voltage to the clutch with it running, see if it is bellow 12.5 volts,it should be closer to 13.5 volts but the ac clutch relay may be the problem,or a trinary switch that is weak, and not conducting ,good negative ground. But check the ac clutch relay, this is most likely the problem.

AC Clutch noise and vibration

An A/C clutch will not make this concern happen, more likely the A/C compressor is begining to go out. The belt on the A/C clutch Assy. free wheels (spins feree on the pulley) when clutch is not engaged. If concern is not present with A/C off this means the bearings in the puley assy. ok. Once the A/C clutch is engaged it locks the compressor against the spinning pulley and turn the compressor chaft and spins the A/C compressor internal shaft. If you hear a loud "screach" when you turn on the A/C it means the belt slipped for a second, if it continiues to screach it means either the belt is loose or that the compressor is internaly locking up. I wouild start by checking the belt tension (if not equipted with and auto tensioner). You can also remove the belt and turn on the A/C and attempt to turn the clutch/pulley by hand, it should turn with a little effect but should not bind or lock at times if that happens compressor is bad.

My airconditioner was working perfectly two days ago, then started blowing tepid air, now it only works well when the temp. is in the 80's.

i think you are low on freon. your compressor clutch wont engage when you are low lift your hood and turn air off watch the compressor and have someone turn on the air and see if clutch engages on the compressor good luck

Clutch on the air conditioner compressor does not engage when I turn on the airconditioner. Looked at fuses but they seem ok. Joe

check to see if you have any power going to the compresser clutch if you dont then your gonna have to back track the wires and start testing things if you do then the electric clutch on the pump is bad its easyer and cheaper to just to replace the whole pump.

My 1997 Honda Civic squeaks terribly when I turn the AC on. What's the problem?

sounds as if the belt is slipping. Check to see if a/c compressor is locked up. With the engine not running you should be able to turn the center of the a/c compressor clutch freely. If not it is locked up. If turns freely check the belt may just be a loose belt..

My airconditioner stops blowing cold air after a trip to town and being shut off and on again. Sometimes I can get it started cooling by pressing the off switch several times. My husband said it gives him...

Check to see if there is too much or not enough refrigerant charge in the system. Check to see if the air conditioner clutch is engaging by observing the compressor pulley area to see if the center is spinning (meaning it's engaged) while the engine is running and the a/c is on after you turn it off and on again.

I do not know what the 'mil' code means.

Compressor is makeing a loud scretching sound when turned on. do i need to add some kind of oil or something.

Wait! Don't spray WD40 on any clutch!

The clutch is supposed to GRIP .. not SLIP...
It can also catch fire!

The compressor may have too much refrigerant... have the pressure checked and capture (don't release) the excess refrigerant. And yes, add oil to the system.
You can do it yourself, but you need some experience...
Any shop / service ststaion will do it for $30 ~ $40...

Hope this helps!

My 1997 Civics A/C compressor is cycling on and off repeatedly. When the clutch pulls in, the engine almost stalls. There is also an occasional chatter (clicking or growling sound) from the compressor...

First, what does the a/c feel like in the vehicle? Is it still blowing cold? Or is it cool/warm but never gets better as you drive?
With the sounds of growling or clicking, more than likely your clutch to the compressor is going out. when it does, you'll get all hot air, and the clutch to the compressor wont turn anymore. Also, with the a/c clutch cycling on/off repeadidly, also an indication that there may be a leak and you've lost coolant/freon. hope this helped!
