Hi. Connect an external monitor and see if you get a display. If you do, turn of your laptop and check if LCD ribbon is properly connected. You need to remove the keyboard to access the LCD connector. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-50898.html The connector is under the keyboard. If the connector is properly connected but still no display. Check if you have a bad CCFL. Turn on your laptop, flip the LCD backward and see if you can notice dim image. If you see dim image, you need to replace the whole LCD assembly or you may try to search for CCFL on ebay. You can also find inverter on ebay. Please let me know the result and will post more solution.

Greetings,

I'm a laptop repair specialist, full time.

You've done the one action that definitively rules out a problem with the LCD panel and the Screen Inverter. Your problem is definitely hardware and not software.

The next least expensive hope of a resorative measure is to remove the RAM modules (sticks) and in some cases, only one of them may have failed. The modules are usually located underneath a small panel with screws on the bottom of the laptop and easy to remove. If you google "How to replace RAM for IBM X31" you'll likely find a quick easy guide online. The idea is to remove both (if there are 2) and replace one at a time. You have to remove the battery each time you switch one. Try both, one at a time, in each bay they clip into.

If you get the same result as your post with no improvement, then at the very least your video chip on the motherboard has failed. At this point you're going to need to have it diagnosed by a local laptop specialist or sent out to any one of several good motherboard repair companies on eBay. At eBay you would type "Laptop Motherboard Repair" in the search window and make contact with the vendors.

You're looking at $100 minimum to as much as $200 for this repair.

Lastly, please remember, "Don't shoot the messenger"! I wish I could have provided you with better news.

Best Wishes

Have got 2nd hand ibm x31, but no manual - don't know how to use it-where can i get users guide

The Thinkpad systems have a built in "Access Help" feature which take the place of a users manual. There should be a button on the top left of your keyboard. Simply press this button to access the application. More info at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-57556

there should be a fitting on that for an external monitor. hook it up to it to see if it works on that. also examine the keys on the keyboard. one should look like a small monitor. generally you tap that key and the function key at the same time to toggle from external to internal monitor. try that first. i wouldn't suggest throwing it out at all. if this is not a solution. post that someone if not myself will offer more advice

IBM x31 thinkpad power off when in battery mode, when i shift to safe mode, it works fine the same thing when using the ac adaptor power directly.

Position your cursor on your screen and right click properties. Select screen saver and and at the bottom your will see power. Click on that and select when you you want your computer to power off on battery or AC power. You will have the option to select "never" on both.

Can't remove x31 from docking station

You asked this question a year ago, and did not get any help.

So, it's time to take a chain-saw to the docking-station, to "sacrifice" it,
and then purchase (on eBay?) a replacement docking-station.

Hi,
You can buy Windows XP at many computer stores or online. Here is a link to an eBay seller in the Philippines, where you appear to be from:
http://cgi.ebay.ph/Geniune-Windows-XP-SP2-Home-Edition_W0QQitemZ110336383681QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_211?hash=item110336383681&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A833|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Then you need to install Japanese fonts and the Japanese IME using the Windows xp disk.
Here is a visual guide for you:

Hope this helps

IBM thinkpad x31 w/ultrabay 2000 blu-ray drive question

If the bay is a DVD drive Blue Ray will work as long as you have a newer DVD decoding software. There are some decoders or codecs at IBM's support site, such as WinVid. If the codecs at IBM do not work with Blue Ray, then try download.com and search for DVD playing software.
