Dryer won't run at all..

Maytag hye2460 won't turn on. Check outlet, replaced fuse and theromstat and still won't turn on?

Hi. The timer will be the culprit. Use my procedure to confirm.

Timer testing procedure:

Once you have gained access to the control device; Take a close look at the timer motor control. Depending on your make and model, there may be a number of wires connected to it. Locate the wires that deliver power to the mechanism. These wires should be slightly larger in size than the other ones. Use your needlenose pliers to remove one of the power leads. Pull the connector off the terminal by pulling on the connector, NOT the wire, or it may break the wire.

Next; Lift the dryers control panel up and set your units timer to a normal dry cycle. If your multimeter came with alligator clip probe adapters, this will be handy here, so put them on if you have them. If not, any meter(ohm) will do.

Now; Set the multimeter to read ohms (usually labeled R1 or RX1). Clip or touch one probe to the terminal from which you removed the wire. Touch the other probe to one of the other terminals. You should get a reading of zero. If you get a high reading, then the timer motor is bad and it's time to replace it.

Now; If the timer proves to be functional, move on to the door switch and start switch. Follow the procedures below to test each:

Door Switch Test:

The door switch may be accessible without removing the front panel or cabinet. The switch is located in the front panel of the dryer, around the perimeter of the door opening. Inspect the switch to determine if it can be popped out or accessed by removing a fastening screw. If it cannot be accessed from the front, it will be necessary to open the dryer cabinet. When reaching into the dryer be careful of sharp edges on the cabinet and interior supports.

Access varies by model, if your dryer has a lower front panel (kick plate) start there. It should lift up and off or it may be held in place with a few screws or snaps; it may also have a catch at the edges or center gap between the kick panel and main panel. To release the catch, push a putty knife, wrapped with masking tape, into the gap and push back the catch. The next easiest access point is the rear panel. The rear access panel is held in place with several screws along the outer edges. The last resort method of access is the removal of the entire front panel. The front panel supports the front of the drum and so removal is more difficult. Front panel removal varies. In general, access is gained by lifting the top (remove the lint trap screws first), removing the screws that secure the front panel, and detaching the panel from the drum.

Locate the door switch, it typically has two wires connected to it. Label the wires and connections so that you can properly reconnect them later. The wires are connected with slip on connectors. Firmly pull the connectors off of the terminals (do not pull on the wire itself). You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the connectors. Inspect the connectors and the terminals for corrosion. If either is corroded they should be cleaned or replaced.

Use a multimeter to test for continuity. Set the meter to the ohms setting X1. For a two wire switch, touch one probe to each terminal. You should get a reading of infinity. With the probes still in place, press and hold the switch, the reading should change to zero.

If the switch does not test as described, it should be replaced.

Start Switch Test:

Locate the start switch(Usually located in the control panel housing). it will have two or three wires connected to it. Label the wires and connections so that you can properly reconnect them later. The wires are connected with slip on connectors. Firmly pull the connectors off of the terminals (do not pull on the wire itself). You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the connectors. Inspect the connectors and the terminals for corrosion. If either is corroded they should be cleaned or replaced.

Use a multimeter to test for continuity. Set the meter to the ohms setting X1. For a two wire switch, touch one probe to each terminal. You should get a reading of infinity. With the probes still in place, press and hold the start switch, the reading should change to zero.

For a three wire switch, touch one probe to the terminal labeled NC (or CT1) and touch the other probe to the terminal labeled CO (or R1). You should get a reading of infinity. With the probes still in place, press and hold the start switch, the reading should change to zero.

If the switch fails either test, it should be replaced.


NOTE_ I suspect the timer, but to be safe, i included the other areas of concern. Although the timer should be the cause, move on to the second and third possible culprits if the timer passes its respective inspection and electrical test.

Maytag Dryer MDE7500AYW. Will not run, the front panel is not lit up. there is power in the outlet, but the dryer will not turn on. any ideas?


Call the Maytag repairman, rumor has it he has nothing to do anyway! A dryer runs on 220 VAC, which means you can have power on half the outlet, but on the other half. Make sure power is on both sides. With dryer unplugged look at the back to see if there is an electrical diagram anywhere. If not on the back it could be under the front panel. Look on the diagram and see if there are any fuses shown on the diagram. Locate the fuses and make sure they are good. Replace any suspected blown fuse, hopefully this will do it!

I have a Bosch Nexxt Dryer 800 series when you try to turn it on, it just makes a click sound, but won't turn on. Any ideas about what's wrong. Thanks Marge

Power From The House

Check to see whether there's power getting to the dryer. Is it plugged in? If you plug something else into the outlet, does it work? If not, check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.

Door Switch

If the door switch or the door-switch actuator is defective, the dryer won't work and you need to replace the failed component. The switch is inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. Check for continuity you should have none with door open, and should have a reading when closed. If not replace the door switch.

Thermal Fuse / Thermal Cut out

On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse (a heat-sensitive fuse that blows if the dryer overheats) mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel or behind the front panel. The fuse is about an inch long. It's usually embedded in black resin and mounted in a white plastic housing or is sometimes round and made of metal and plastic.

If the fuse has blown, it has no continuity. When this happens, your dryer either just stops heating, or it doesn't work at all. Be sure to inspect the venting/heating system before replacing the fuse this is the most common reason for blowing the fuse. (You can't re-set this type of fuse.)

Wiring

Often the main wiring connection from the house, at the dryer, burns and the connection breaks. In this has happened to your dryer, you need to replace the power cord and the terminal block inside the dryer to which the wire is attached.

Dryer wont start


If the problem you are having is that your Maytag gas dryer is not starting, these are the parts you will need to check until you find and correct the problem.

You need to make sure that the wall outlet has 120 volts presents in it, in order for the dryer to be able to start. Connect a good working hair dryer in the wall outlet, if the hair dryer works, then you know that the wall outlet is not the problem.

Most gas dryers have one thermal fuse and some have two thermal fuses wired in series with the motor. If any of the thermal fuses are blown that could be one of the reasons of your dryer not starting.

The timer is the distribution center in the dryer, the timer will send the right voltage to each of the individual parts in the dryer. Most common problem with the timer, is burnt contacts.

The motor is in charge of turning the tumbler, turning the blower to circulate hot air inside of the dryer and making sure that the heating element won't come on when the dryer motor is not running. A bad or weak motor could be the reason for your Maytag gas dryer not starting.

The door switch is a safety device use to prevent the dryer motor from starting or running when the door in the dryer is open. Burnt contacts or a broken actuator on the switch could be the reason that the dryer is not starting.

The push to start switch is single pole single throw switch that is use to start the motor. Once the motor starts running the switch is no longer in the motor circuit. A bad push to start switch could be the cause of your dryer not starting.

Burnt terminals or wires on the cord could be the reason for your dryer not starting.

As you can see, if any one of these parts fails the dryer will not start.

Check the door interlock switch. If it is defective, the machine will not start. If no help, then there may be trouble in the control panel.

most dryers have a thermal switch or breaker in the cavity somewhere, they can become worn over time and will stop heating, the item probably looks like a copper arm that touches a contact similar to a old morse code key by looks
