SOURCE: Trying to replace 3 speed ceiling fan switch

Hello,

The black goes to the L connection the others are a guess. You can do this two ways. Connect the colored wires in any sequence and then see what switch sequence give you high and lowest, the other one will be medium. Once you determine that, mark the wires with a piece of masking tape as high, medium and low. Otherwise you connect them, turn power on and use a multimeter to see which color gives you the highest voltage and which gives you lowest. Since you aren't comfortable using live wires and a meter, go with the first option and use the process of elimination to find the wires giving you the speeds you need to find the highest and lowest. Next, you need to determine how your switch sequence works. First pull has to give you highest speed. so you may end up wiring them in reverse if your first attempt is backwards. There is a reason the first pull needs to be highest, it powers up the motor so you can then chose a lower setting. A low setting first will over tax your motor and wear it out eventually as it has to work harder at first.

Let me know if you need further clarification and perhaps this is all you need to get fixed.

Regards,
Worldvet
ps I checked on the Internet of a wiring diagram and I bet you did tok all to no avail.

What I did was (but be VERY VERY carefull) is have the fan plugged in, and check which wires give which speed when you touch the main wire. VERY carefull. I'm not liable for any harm done to you or your fan.

How do I get the wires out of the old 3 speed ceiling fan switch so I can replace it with a new one?

Usually, there is no way to remove the wires from the switch. Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the circuit going to your fan. Then, match up the new switch with the old one to make sure you have the correct one, with the correct amount of wires. Mark the placement of of these wires with masking tape or draw yourself a diagram. Next, you need to cut the wires as close to the old switch as possible, and strip back about 1/2" of the insulation on these wires. Now connect those wires to the leads (wires) coming from the new switch with small wire nuts or crimp fasteners. When connecting the cut wires to the new switch leads, follow the same pattern as the old switch (refer to your masking tape labels or your diagram). Now you can secure the switch to the fan casing with it's locknut, and carefully tuck the wiring back inside. Re-secure the casing to the fan.

I have a 3 speed fan with a red, blue, black an white wires, how are the supposed to be wired with power. the wires go to a little black box that appears to just be wires with no circuit board

The BOX is a GE splicer - with 6 wires - 2 grey power wires, then the red, blue, black, and white from the fan motor. I have the same problem and cannot find another GE SPLICER 3 SPEED SWITCH for the fan. All switches that I have tried have 4 connections.........so a WIRING DIAGRAM would be GREAT!

Can anyone offer any help? I have tried every electrical store in the area!

Thanks

I have a 3 speed fan switch with 4 wires. The wire colors are grey, black, yellow, and brown. Where do they go such as L,1,2,3 on the switch?

Did you get a wiring diagram with the switch/fan? This should tell you which is which.

Each manufacturer has different color coding. If you didn't get a diagram, contact the manufacturer for instructions.

Good luck,

The reverse switch on my Hampton Bay ceiling fan didn't work. I cut the 6 wires; 1 white, 1 gray, 2 pink, 2 yellow. Here's what I did. Removed reverse switch. Had 6 wires white, gray, 2 yellow, 2 pink. Connected gray to yellow, connected white to pink and fan runs fine. Is this OK? I do not need to reverse fan. It's been running for 1 hour now with no problems. Don S.

Just replaced broken pull 3-speed switch. Fan now only runs on two speeds, need wiring diagram please

I ran into this when replacing the 3 spd switch. The replacement switch has a pair of connections at each position; you would assume the two connections are electrically tied together, they are not. The switch assembly actually has two seperate 4-position rotary switches. If your "L" wire is on the 'inner' connection, then your motor speed wires will have to be as well.
