Question about Televison & Video
Hi,
Kindly mention few details :-
1. Make and Model of the DVD player?
2. How old is the unit?
3. Have you tried to open the player and manually cleaning the lens?
4. Is that the problem with all DVD's?
Let me know,so that we could proceed.
Thanks!!

It's a Go.Video DV140 which I purchased 5 years ago, but have hardly ever used. Now I've joined Netflix and hopefully can get the DVD part to work. Or I'll have to get a new one.
I have not opened it manually - how would I do that? Give me details.
Thanks.
I forgot to say that during the hours that I've loaded discs it has played 3 times - once with a 'real/new' disc and one that had been burned.
Thanks for your response!!
If you hardly use any electronic item over such a long span, there ought to be few problems. These symptoms are highly suggestive of ' Lens problem ' than any other electronic or software problem ( though possibility is rare ).
There is no point of purchasing the lens when there are so many DVD players which are available in the market at incredible lower price. However, you could give a shot to manually clean the lens. It worked few times like a charm.
To clean
manually unplug from wall and leave
two minutes.Remove cover identify the lens as a small round glass lens
in the DVD tray assembly.Clean with the glass lens with a cotton bud or
similar, use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol or do the clean dry,
any other cleaning product could damage the unit.Remove any foreign
objects in the unit.Reassemble and test
If no luck then
you will need a new laser assembly I'm afraid.
Now, regarding
Caps. Yes, it could be another Problem. When you Open the
Player, you would see Caps like :-
If you see,
Cylindrical Type Components, all those are Caps. There might
be chance that any one of these could be Leaked / Bulged / Swelled.
Make sure that there is no Cold Solder Joint and there is no other
Broken Component on the Board.
If you find anything Swelled /
Leaked / Bulged, you could De Solder and Re Solder the New Caps. The
caps could be easily available in the Market. You could buy it Online or
you could go to Radio Shack, Fry's.Make sure to Buy a Similar one. I
have seen , if you buy a Low Quality Cap, it could again Swelled or
Blown.Usually Bad Caps have Ammonia Kind of Odor.
The Cost of
Caps would be less than $20.
I hope that the
above information would be useful for you to Resolve the Problem.
Let
me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.

Thanks for your response!!
If it works intermittently, it is almost certain that it is a faulty lens.

Ok, Following your instructions I took the cover off and cleaned the lens as you directed.
When I turned it back on and loaded a disc I got the same results - 'read' then 'error' and 'check disc' on the screen. I ran the lens cleaner that I got at Radio Shack and it showed the same messages.
I loaded a CD and it played fine so I know it is spinning the disc OK.
Since this didn't work I guess I'll purchase a new DVD/VCR. I found good reviews for the Magnavox model DV225MG9. It's about $75 at Sears.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response!!
Most of the DVD / VCR are on the same line. Yes, DV225MG9 is worth the money. But, you could get it at a lower price on many other places. For example :-
http://www.vivaladeals.com/p-1093-magnav...
It is available for $39.99.
So, before you buy it, do go for window shopping and before you buy it, do call their customer support number to verify the warranty details and replacement options. I have seen many people got faulty players via online shopping.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
