Question about DVD & Blu-Ray Players

1 Answer

I have a Panasonic DVD Video recorder Model DMR-E55 and when it is turned on it just loops on the start up self check process and never fully boots up. I am wondering if the disc drive may have failed (I am just guessing as it will not even let me open the disc drawer). The unit is out of warranty and I am wondering whether it is worth considering repair or is the cost or repair likely to be similar to or excees the cost of a new DVD recorder.

I took it to the Panasonic service centre is Auckland who replaced the power card, cleaned the RAM disk drive and updated the firmware all within the $55 Diagnoses fee.

Panasonic DMR-E55 gives frequently "SELF CHECK". Sometimes it working ok but when i try to erase some recordings he goes to SELF CHECK. The problem came very slowly. Is this a problem with the power...

in short "yes". the switching regulator IC (component found on heatsink "cooks" because the heatsink is not big enough).
start with checking power supply capacitors for bulging tops or electronic leakage (preferably using ESR meter) & fitting bigger heatsink. If problem persists then replace switching regulator IC

Self checking

I have had a Panasonic DMR-E85 with this exact same problem you are describing. As I bought a Freeview Dual-tuner PVR I just bought a second-hand DMR-E55 as I liked the Panasonic interface. Two months down the line it is now exhibiting the exact same problems, except now as well as the continual self-check rebooting, it's also refusing to eject the disk. Booo. Time for me to buy a new DVD recorder again, and this time certainly not Panasonic... :(

Recorder keeps 'self checking' then taking dvd back to begining, although only on recordable dvd's, not rented. Are recorders worth repairing or are you better just buying another?

DVD recorder continually stuck on a loop trying to read disk.

Hi again

Well done!

I am so pleased to hear that you have restored the DMR E55 and for taking the trouble to let me know. It's always satisfying to achieve something like that and I guess you'll get even more pleasure from using it now than you did before. They are good machines and well worth the effort to keep them going.

Thanks again and kind regards

Will my non finalzied discs play on a panasonic ez 28 or ex 768

You will have no problem playing your non finalized discs on any of the Panasonic DMR range including the DMR EZ28 series. The DMR E55 can also easily be repaired if you can use a soldering iron and a little care. Please checkout my other postings for full repair details.

AELFCHECK Problem with Panasonic DVD Recorder

Hi

This problem is associated with a regulator on the power board. It's an easy fix if you can use a soldering iron.

If not you may be able to get someone to repair it for you. I have posted instructions on how to replace the defective component.

Please note the instructions I have given refer to the DMR E55 but the E95H is much the same.
