Question about ViewSonic VA720 17" LCD Flat Panel Monitor
My 17" ViewSonic continually goes blank after approximately 3 seconds. The monitor still has power and the green power LED remains lit. When I cycle the power button, the monitor turns off and on just as in normal operation. However, it continually shuts down after 2-3 seconds. I have tried the computer with a different monitor and had no problems so I don't think its the graphics card. I don't know what to check next, the transformer, monitor control/power CCA, other? I'm hoping for a quick, inexpensive fix, any suggestions?
I had a similar problem with a Westinghouse 19" LCD. Had left power on
while running errands, but came home to a black screen. I could cycle
the power and see the desktop image but it would go black after 2-3
Out of curiosity, after cycling the power, I immediately pressed the monitor settings button, and was able to get into the menu . . ., no black out . . . I changed the brightness setting and crossed my fingers while I let the setting menu time out . . ., lo and behold, it's working again.
Perhaps Mark could comment as to why this might have worked.
. . . and yes, I do feel lucky . . .

You are right in assuming it to be the monitor.
It is the inverter circuit that powers the backlights inside the LCD.
No backllight, no view. If you shine a bright light into the screen you will see it is still working, just not visible.
The Viewsonic range of monitors have a habit after several years use developing bad capacitors that need to be replaced. It's something that happens to most LCD's and alot of other electronics.. so not a design flaw, just age.
If you have modest electrical knowledge then its an easy job, If not then take it to your local TV repairman and have them do it. It should not cost alot to have it done. The main expense in this case is the labour.
Call a few shops in the area and get rough quotes to have it done. You will be surprised how much the cost can vary for the same simple job.
