Hello dwanger754,

Generally, when a file is deleted, only the visible reference to it is deleted. The file still exists on the HDD although you dont see it. If you want to recover this file, there are a lot of "Undelete" or recovery software that can accomplish this. However the most important step with any file recovery technique is to avoid using the drive that holds the deleted files. There is a good chance the file is still present but if you use the computer, the possibility of file recovery decreases.

File Recovery 4 is a free program to recover lost files. All you do is download and Install the program on the computer – try to avoid the same drive as the deleted files. Follow the simple steps and fingers-crossed the file can be recovered. It can undelete a lost file from FAT, FAT!6, FAT32 and NTFS file system format. Plus it can finds partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged.

File Recovery 4 can also recover most common files types. Even if part of the file is damaged and beyond recovery, you may be able to get back some useful fragments - recovering half of a lost 10,000 word assignment is better than having nothing at all :)

How to Recover Deleted Files from Seagate Hard Drive in Windows XP?

Accidently delete important filesusing Shift+Delete keys in Windows XP? Can't get valued pictures back from therecycle bin after you emptied it? How to retrieve data from 'not recognized'hard drive and reconstruct inaccessible partition?

You'reLuck!Deleting or formatting won't make the data erased permanently.Thosedeleted data are still stored in the hard drive. They're just invisible orinaccessible.Only the FAT or NTFS table is erased (the information about wherethose data were saved), but the real data are still intact there in sectors ofthe hard drive.
So long as those deleted data are not overwritten by new data, it's highlypossible to recover them. The most effective way is to rely onsome data recovery program.

Tenorshare DataRecovery is a powerful data recovery program that can easily recover lost, damaged, formatted and accidently deleted data from your laptop or computerhard disk and all kinds of USB media drives. It can recover data afterdeeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data you accidentally deletedor formatted.
This program is equipped with four critical modules:"deleterecovery", "format recovery", "partition recovery" and"raw recovery". It can recover data after deeply scanning yourstorage device to look for lost data due to drives crash, virus corruptedpartitions, system sabotage, physical damage etc.
It supports for almost all Windows systems like Windows XP,Windows7,Vista,2000,2003,NT and common file systems (FAT12, FAT16,FAT32 and NTFS).You can get ithere: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm

It can RecoverLost Data Due to

Accidental deleting

» "Shift + Delete" without backup
» "Delete All" when deleting useless files
» Cut files instead of copying and pressing"Cancle" button
» Emptying Recycle Bin after delection
Formatting
» "Media/Drive is not formatted would you liketo format now?"
Virus infection/attack
Unexpected power off
Others
» Factory setting of device
»System reinstalling but want to retrieve the oldfiles
» Inaccessible partition or drive
» Dead hard drive
» Losing files during transferring files fromstorage device to PC/laptop
» Pulling out card while the camera is on
» Removing out storage devices not in "saferemove the drive"
» Turning off the camera during a write process

Then,howto retrieve deleted files?

Withinfour steps, you can get back your data:
1.Select deleted recovery. It will take you a few minutes to scan your storagedevice;
2. heck the deleted datayou want to recover;
3.Select a path folder for the recovered files;
4.Click "OK" to finish recovery.

Onemore tip:

If the hard drive can't be detected(means can't showup in 'My Computer' as a drive letter like C: drive),you can try this way.Putthe hard drive in a zip-lock bag and put it in the freezer for 2-3 hours. Thenwhile it's still cold plug it into the computer. If it fails, you will have to go to a recoveryoffice but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whetherthey can recover the data or not is not guarantee.

Reformat seagate 120gb portable harddisk - freeagent

Hi johnsil,

If the drive shows up in MY COMPUTER then the easy way to format the drive is right-clicking on it then choosing FORMAT. This will erase everything in the drive, so make sure to back up everything in the drive before formatting it.

Now if the drive doesn't show up in MY COMPUTER you may have to goto the Control Panel click on Administrative Tools then select Computer Management then click on the category of "STORAGE", you should see there Disk Management. Carefully look there for your Seagate 120GB Freeagent drive, right-click then choose format, and that should format the drive.

Hope this helps!

Peace! :)

Fixing Windows Updates that keep failing to install

This should work for most if not all MS updates. Try the following:
  • turn off Windows Update temporarily (may or may not be necessary)
    • go to a Command (cmd) prompt (Start, Run, cmd, OK)
    • type in, without quotes: "sc stop wuauserv" (or, "net stop wuauserv")
  • in Windows Explorer delete all files from the following folder: c:windowsSoftwareDistributionDownload
    • to get there, just copy and paste that path, above, into your Start, Run line and click OK or hit Enter
    • highlight all the files in there (press Ctrl-A) and either right-click and choose Delete or just press the Delete key on your keyboard. Don’t delete that folder itself, just all files and folders within it
  • turn the Windows Update service back on
    • go to a Command (cmd) prompt (Start, Run, cmd, OK)
    • type in, without quotes: "sc start wuauserv" (or, "net start wuauserv")

Computer will not recognize the Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500 GB

If the hard drive is new and still unformatted, you will need to format it. Confirm that it is recognized in disk management (start>control panel>administrative tools>computer management) Go to the list on the left and expand "storage." Then click disk management. You should see your drives listed. Find your seagate 500GB drive, right click on it and then click format. It will take awhile for a 500 GB drive but once it is done, the drive should be usable.

WARNING: this will delete any files on the drive, meaning that if it is not new and you have files on it already, then they will be deleted.

WRITE PROTECTION

There are a number of reasons why you are unable to delete files and you need to be sure that the file is no longer required before you delete it. If a file won't allow you to delete it, it can mean a program on your computer is using it.

However, you can try the following...........

The simple way is to reboot your computer in "Safe Mode." To do this, reboot your computer, as the computer is booting, repeatedly press F8 until the option to select safe mode appears. Select safe mode and allow the computer to fully boot. Safe mode only loads all the critical and vital software to support your operating system and not all the programs installed on your computer. When the computer has booted, look for the file you want to delete and try to remove it. If you are able to delete the file, you can now reboot the computer normally, simply by restarting.

If this does not work a more complicated way of removing the file is to use DOS or Command Mode. This will definitely allow you to delete the file but is tricky if you have not used Command Mode before. Command mode will allow you to delete the complete folder so if there are other files in the folder that you want to keep, be sure to either put them in a different folder or move the file you want to delete into its own separate folder. Using command mode is irreversible so be sure you don't delete anything you are likely to need.

I will call the folder you want to delete FRED, just to identify it. Make a note of exactly where it is located on your hard drive, for example
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\FRED

Restart the computer pressing F8 like you did for safe mode.
This time select 'Command Mode.'
This will open a screen that looks old fashioned and there will be a prompt that will say something like
C:\Documents and Settings\Your_name>

Type del C:\WINDOWS\Resources\FRED
This will delete the folder called FRED which will remove your write protected file.
Then just restart you computer normally, the file will have been successfully removed.
