You should first make a wired connection to the router and ensure that the wireless feature is enabled? Did you check this? Also most desktops do not come with a wlan card by default you should either obtain a WLAN card or a USB wireless adapter if you wanna connect it to wireless network.

My laptop is 6 months old and I was told it has wireless capabilities built in, this set up is to be used in same location as the router, do I need to activate this capability?

You need to configure the router. First try to turn on the wireless switch on the laptop. Let me know the make and model of the laptop and I will help you do this. Also it was not the laptop I was talking about, its the desktop that does not have wireless capability.

  • dhagopian119 Jul 16, 2010

Thank you, I just installed a netgear wireless adapter on the desktop, hopefully that will work, but if you could tell me how switch the wireless switch on the lap top I would appreciate it

  • dhagopian119 Jul 16, 2010

The lap top is a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965

I will surely help you with that if you can get me the make and model of the laptop.

Press Fn+F8 to enable/disable the wi-fi. See if can find the network. If problem persists we will check for wireless driver problems and whether wireless is enabled on your router.

Sorry I lost connection, my laptop has the wireless switch on and does not see the internet

    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Ok. Do you have LAN cable so that you can connect to the router using it and enable wireless?

  • dhagopian119 Jul 16, 2010

yes but the laptop doesn't see the internet ( optimum )

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Its enabled on the laptop. I am talking about the router. On the router there will be an option to enable wifi. Just wanna make sure that it is enabled.

  • dhagopian119 Jul 16, 2010

I don't know which button does this on the router, there is no documentation

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Its not a button. You have to enter the router configuration mode to do this. I can help you do it provided you have a lan cable that you can use to connect to the router.

  • dhagopian119 Jul 16, 2010

    I have the cable

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Ok. Connect the cable to the router then connect it to the router Type in 192.168.1.1 into your browser's address bar and hit enter. Leave the user name field blank and type in your password. Hit enter. Click on the option that says wireless and see if you can find an option to enable it. Otherwise just get me the screen shot with the configuration utility open and I will help you deal with this.

    Sorry I meant modem-router-pc

  • dhagopian119 Jul 16, 2010

Everything is not simple my friend. More so considering your apparent lack of experience. I am trying to help you the best way I could. Here in fixya it is illegal to use remote support. Otherwise I would have configured it for you myself.

  • dhagopian119 Jul 16, 2010

I know that everything is not easy, I was told this all was plug and play. I guess I should apologize for my lack of experience, you have interesting customer service skills, good thing you're not in sales

  • Configure the Router
    1. Step 1

Open your web browser, type "http://192.168.1.1/ " into the address bar and hit "Enter."

    2. Step 2

Use "Admin" as the username in the pop-up box and leave the password blank.

    3. Step 3

Connect to the Internet and click on "Internet Setup."

    4. Step 4

Select your connection type from the drop-down menu. Choose "DHCP" for cable modems or "PPPoE" for most DSL modems. If you are unsure of these options, check with your ISP.

    5. Step 5

Set a service set identifier (SSID) to identify the router and change the password.

    6. Step 6

Encrypt your wireless connection using a Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key. Under the "Wireless Security" option, enter a passphrase and click "Generate." This will generate a password which will need to be used by any client connecting to your router.

For beginners-how do i connect the linksys e1000 to my hughes net modem? or do I hook the cable directly to my tower so i can use my laptop in another room

The modem will plug into the router, it should come with a cable for this, there will be 5 ports on the router, one will be labeled as internet most likely , this is the one you use, the other 4 will be numbered and you can use any of these to connect your tower. the wireless should work automaticly for your laptop, but if you want to make it a secure network, please contact me directly and ill walk you through it.
hope this was helpful

if you're running windows 7 sometimes it tries to auto detect the type of network but doesn't ask for a password, when it starts to try to auto detect hit cancel and enter in the password manually.

I have a linksys WRT54G, and I'm trying to hook up a wi-fi connection. As of now, my internet is Internet Explorer, and my current modem is a motorola SB5101. The Motorola modem is hooked up directly to...

Hello
Try this

1 disconnect all wires, including power from the modem and router.
2 Find reset button on router usually in the back, need a pen tip or paper clip to hold it in.
3 Hold in reset for 1 min.
4 Reconnect modem first,power up.
5 Reconnect router second, power up.

Try changing the ethernet wire from the modem to the router.

So your going to have your cable coax wire to the modem. Then a ethernet wire from the modem to the router, then a ethernet wire from the router to the computer.

Sounds like you may have one wire in the wrong place.

How do I hook up my linksys to my desk top pc (XP) so I can run my lap top from upstairs

Are you trying to set up router ?
You can set up your router manually, without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

How do i connect and get signal?

This is a common problem with Linksys wireless routers and primarily the WRT54G and WRT54GS. For some odd reason they all of a sudden go stupid and forgetful.

The easiest method to revive these routers is to go to the Linksys web site and get the automatic configuration download for your specific model of wireless router.

Hope this helps you

Inability to connect to Internet

The easiest solution would be to use an ethernet connection. A second problem is probably on most cable modems you can either use a USB connection OR an ethernet connection you cannoot use both at the same time.
