Hi,

Clear the system cache:
1. On the console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
2. Select Memory.
3. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller.
4. Select Clear System Cache. If Clear System Cache is not available, use the following controller button sequence to clear the system cache: X, X, left bumper, right bumper, X, X Note If you don't see a system maintenance prompt on the screen, try pressing the button sequence again.

Try playing discs without the hard drive in:
1. Turn off your console.
2. Locate the hard drive on your console.
Press the release button on the hard drive and lift the hard drive from the console.
Turn on your console.
3. Try to play a game disc.

If this resolves the problem, you will need to replace the hard drive. If not, do the same thing for your memory units. If it works without them, they may be bad.
Thank you !!

It is not the drive that is faulty this is quite a common error you will need to stop the heat on the sensors on the back of the drive to fix it - either send it in and get it fixed or use a good guide to fix it.

dont bother listening to pricks ike dhemmings , they will just guide you to **** links that charge you for a repair manual that is useless.I reccomend using torrent program 'BitComet' . just type bitcomet into google its a free download. when installed goto a torrent site and search for repair manuals for xbox 360 and download one. Totally free and no pop ups from crappy sites unlike the links this ***** is offering. I assure you it wont cost to do what i'm suggesting my motivation for this post is that i hate pricks like this lot that promise you a solution while they are just trying to rip you off, which by the way is what microsoft are doing with the xbox by making a machine that is guarenteed to go wrong after about 18 months so you can send it to them to repair for a big price. My advice is buy a PS3 as you will notice there are not nearly as many posts on the internet asking why they dont work anymore because they last forever. ps. ******** dhemmings

The DVD-ROM is malfunctioning. Some say that it's because the magnet that holds the disc is either too strong and holding the disc so that the ROM can't spin it properly, or that the magnet is too weak and isn't holding it well enough to spin it correctly. You can get replacement roms from ebay and other auction sites, but it isn't just as easy as replacing the rom, like it is with a desktop computer. When an XBOX 360 is assembled it is all formatted to that precise machine. To change the rom in it will require you to find a "hack" program to flash the XBOX 360 so that it will recognize and accept the new rom. Its easier said than done. You can send it in to Microsoft and they will fix it for about $100. At that price you can go buy an "arcade system" and put your current hard drive into that. Or if you don't want to do the fix yourself or send it to Microsoft, you could sell it to someone who does know how to fix it and use that money towards buying a new XBOX 360.

My xbox 360 doesnt want to read the game. when i put in gears of war, it tells me to open tray. i open it then close it and again it tells me to open tray. ive done the clean cd and still the same thing....

Unfortunately this is a common issue with the xbox. If you have tried all the steps that are provided on the xbox support website, it may be time to call xbox support and get your xbox repaired. If it is out of warranty, I'd honestly just get a new one cause the repairs run about $120 out of warranty.

When I put in Call of duty Black ops in my Xbox 360 it keeps telling me to open and close tray reapeatidly

The XBox 360 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser (and/or other components in the drive) will eventually burn out. The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the games will stop reading altogether and you will get an "OPEN TRAY" message when you put a disc in and close the tray. What this means is that the XBox 360 thinks that there is no disc in the system.

You can find more information, along with any parts or repair services you need to fix the issue yourself (or have them fix it) at the following page:

The xbox 360 elites keeps on saying open tray when trying to play

1, the disc may be dirty
2. the mian reason for this your xbox drive cannot read the disc , because the power of the lens is gone(not completely) ,

solution:

1. keep your disc inside the drive and switch off the console, again swith on try this 2 to 3 time
2. keep the console in vertical position or little slanding position(180 dg) make sure it does not fall

3. its better to buy hatddisc and load the game inside it , so that u lens life increased

4. change the entire drive

My xbox always says open tray and close tray, it wont play my games, no red ring

The disc tray is messing up. The same thing is happening with my 360. Here are two different suggestions:

  • Put the disc in the 360, and then turn the console off. Turn it back on, and it might start playing the game for you. This has worked for me a few times.

  • Call Microsoft's Support line (I think it's 1-800-MY-XBOX in the US), and tell them about it. If your console is within warranty, they should repair it for you, free of charge.

Xbox 360 disk tray wont stay shut

My 360 is/was having a similar problem...my 360 would say "reading disc" then "open tray". Well since my system is only about 8 months old...I opted to send it in for repair. Its under warranty. My system is in route to be fixed as we speak. I would advise you to get yours registered too.

When your son knocked the console over, he may have broke a component connecting to the disk drive, especially if the console was on.
