Air conditioner and dehumidifier on at the same time, all the time. Constantly having to empty water. Is there a way to just run the AC without the dehumidify function? Manual is no help.

Unless you are licensed and qualified professional, do not try to repair a dehumidifier by yourself. If your unit is running constantly yet there is no water in the tank, try lowering the temperature control. If the problem persists, there may be a problem within the refrigeration system. You may need to pull the filter and clean it. Also try wiping off the unit itself. When the water tank is full, the unit will shut off and will not run until the tank is emptied. The dehumidifier shuts off by a safety switch in the back of the unit. If the switch is not working properly, you may try manually pressing the button or slightly bending the switch.
Motor If the fan motor is damaged or will not work, no cool air will be coming out of the dehumidifier. The unit, however, may still run. You may need to replace the motor. If the coils in the back of the dehumidifier constantly freeze, try turning off the unit for an hour or re-locating the unit to a higher position to allow the room to heat up. If your water tank is constantly full and you are emptying it on a daily basis, you may have a water leak somewhere in the room with the dehumidifier.

    Tip

    Dehumidifier VS. Air conditioner

A dehumidifier is basically the same thing as an air conditioner but both coils (condenser and evaporator) are in the same unit meaning a dehumidifier exhaust warm air in the same room it is in. running a dehumidifier would make an air conditioner run more because of the warm exhaust, when you run an air conditioner it acts like a dehumidifier and dries the air. As far as saving energy it all depends on the size of the AC and dehumidifier and the size of the room. If you want warm dry air, use a dehumidifier; if you want cool dry air run the AC but not both.
How do all these parts fit together to pull moisture from the air? It's fairly simple, but very effective:
    1. A fan collects air from the surrounding area and pulls it into the dehumidifier.
    2. As the air passes through, it comes into contact with the dehumidifier's cooled coils. These coils use condensation to pull moisture from the air. The collected moisture remains on the coils and drips into the dehumidifier's reservoir.
    3. The dehumidifier reheats the air and exhausts it back into the room.
A dehumidifier usually has a removable plastic bucket for are reservoir; most buckets also have a place where you can hook up a hose so the collected water can drain straight into a floor drain or pump. This frees you from having to remember to dump out the water. But don't worry too much about the reservoir overflowing -- most dehumidifiers also have an automatic shut-off. If you're using a dehumidifier in extremely moist conditions, however, or if you need to keep your dehumidifier on all the time, you should look into a unit with a built-in condensate pump, which regularly pumps water out of the unit's reservoir rather than simply relying on gravity to empty it as a hose does.

I believe this means you need to empty the water catch tray. Normally a pull out tray at the rear with a float arm in it. It will keep happening as the water is condensed out of the air during the dehumidification. Empty it out and start again, it will need regularly emptying.

Not condensating the water out the exaust hose.. having to drain every few hours

Since your model also has a Dehumidifier feature, make sure that is turned OFF. Running that and the AC mode at the same time will generate more water than usual. Plus, it puts a strain on the AC side, as it will only operate at half capacity, if the dehumidifier is operating at the same time.

Also, make sure that the exhaust hose is not clogged or has a significant downward bow to it.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Dehumidifiers are small Air Conditioners that blow their cool air over the condensing coil rather than into the room. They work exactly like an AC unit except they don't blow their warm air outside. If you can install an AC unit of about the same size, you can dehumidify AND cool for the same energy costs. All you should need to do is plug it in and run a hose to a drain or keep its condensate tank emptied. By the way, the water it produces is free of minerals and some people say its good to wash your hair with. (?)

    1 Answer

How can I determine if the ac is removing the correct amount of moisture from the air?

tech answer is:3 pints of water per hour per 1 ton of cooling.
General rule of thumb is 20-25% of the capacity of the unit is devoted to dehumidifying.
If unit runs constantly and the temp really does not seem to be effected, unit is probably too small. If unit runs and cycles off frequently, i.e. short run times, and humidity is high, unit is too big.

    Hope this helps
