You will need a power supply upgrade also. I had an Nvidia 7600 GS 512mb card installed and had to get a higher capacity power supply. The stock for the 500x series is 120-150 watts. I got 300 I believe which will handle the new graphics card with a little extra capacity left. The new card makes a world of difference in running video or image editing software. Oddly, if you look for graphics cards on Wikipedia you will find a very detailed discussion of them.

Hello truebluestan,

Well, basically it depends upon your system configuration, the amount of RAM you have and the type of slots available on your motherboard.

Take a look HERE for competitively priced video cards
If you have a PCI Express slot and are willing to spend some cash, ASUS GeForce 9600GT or EVGA GeForce 8800GTS(320MB) video cards. If you are looking for something cheaper in the PCI Express slot variety, the EVGA GeForce 8600GT is a good buy for your system configuration.

If you want something for the AGP slot, the SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 3850 would be a good choice.
Hope that helps..

P.S. Before you assign a rating, please make sure that the issue is resolved. If it isn't, please post back as to what you did, and/or any other questions you may have, and I will try to assist you as best I can.
If you find that the solution I provided led you to, or resulted in a fix, please close the ticket with a FixYa! or Helpful rating, which would be much appreciated :)
Please do not assign an ‘Inappropriate’ or ‘Thanks for trying’ rating after the first response itself, as sometimes a bit of to and fro dialogue may be necessary before we can find a fix or an answer to your query.

Thank you for using FIXYA!

Cheers!

You can find some pretty decent PCI video cards HERE and HERE
It is difficult to tell you what to get specifically. It is basically down to your budget and how much memory you need on the card :)

    Happy shopping!

Video Failure

When you took the battery out you reset the Bios... You need to go back into the Bios and select Load system defaults from the main menu and reboot.

Go into Bios again and select the PCI-X or PCI depending on what new graphics card you have, or select Auto if its an option from the selections.

Also, I know it sounds stupid, but don't forget to plug the video cord into the proper spot. You'd be surprised how many people accidentally forget to plug it into the new card instead of the onboard graphics.

Installed a new graphic cards for Gateway DX4710-UB801A, it works for a day, but the next day, it wouldn't turn on, the power supply is not running.

Pull the new graphics card out to see if the power supply will start up, if no change, you will need a new power supply module.

Im trying to disable the on board graphics card so i can install then new on i just bought. i have a gateway GT4024 and the onboard graphics card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series

Your board has ATI integerated graphics, no need to remove. You would upgrade by adding a PCIe express card in slot. Do you have such a card? If you need installation instructions, let me know at "add a comment"

Gateway GT5032 add a video card on PCI E slot and no video shows.

Hi,

Please check if the following is in order:

  1. Make sure the graphics card is seeded correctly in the PCI-Express slot.
  2. Make sure that the graphics card has power.
  3. Make sure your screen cable is connected to the graphics card and not the on-board connector.

You also have to install the graphics drivers that came with the card to get a proper resolution on your screen.

Hope this helps!
Please let me know if this information was useful!

Kind Regards

I need to know what graphics card to use to update

The Gateway 610 uses an AGP graphics slot so any video card with AGP hookup should work fine. The link below is to a parts site for this computer.

Unable to get my new graphics card to work

Just moments ago, I downloaded the latest (v9.4) Vista 64-bit driver for my LX 6200 for my HD 4650 512MB video card. It seems to have fixed a cursor flickering problem, but didn't help with the screen saver problem. My card is made by Sapphire and I downloaded the driver from there site at: http://www1.sapphiretech.com/us/support/drivers.php

Disabling the built in HD3200 is key to successfully installing the Catalyst software.

Monitors wont work

It appears that you have a faulty graphics card.
If the graphics card is integrated with the motherboard then it cannot be repaired. Just purchase a new AGP graphics card, insert it into the AGP slot and connect your monitor to this card.
You may need to go to the BIOS setup to disable the on-board graphics card.
If you don't have an integrated graphics card, then buy a replacement graphics card.
You will need to install the new graphics drivers after installing the graphics card.
