Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

LG 42LC2D When you supply power to the TV it automatically turns on (green LED flashes 2 times then goes solid green) and comes up with the last input selected. The video and sound are working great at this point. The problem is that the side buttons do not work at all nor does the remote. When you push buttons on the remote, the green LED flashes as if reading the signal but nothing happens on the TV. Nothing happens at all when side buttons are pushed. Things I have tried: I have tried cleaning the Remote input jack on the back. I have replaced the IR Remote sensor board and cable to the MB with a brand new one. I have tried disconnecting the board with the side keys on it and seeing if the remote would work. Same behavior with LED flashing as if getting signal but nothing on the TV. Here is the kicker: I have connected to the RS232 port with a laptop and I can make all the TV functions work properly including turning the set on and off, all inputs, everything. If I turn the set off using the RS232 port and then remove power supply for 15 seconds or so, when I plug it back in the TV once again automatically powers up (even though I had it "powered down" or in standby as the last known state prior to removing all power).

I am not having luck getting LG to help upgrade the firmware on this model of television. If my problem is indeed the need to update the VChip firmware...does anyone else have any information on loading firmware on a set that doesn't have a USB connection. I assume you have to have a USB to RS232 port adapter..but I also read that I may have to have a 'service remote' to access and make it upload. Any additional information is appreciated.

You need to go to your owner's or, service manual or, if you do not have it you can get a pdf owner's or, service manual online and, then find how to enter the service menu: for most of these sets it is usually channel up + sound down pressed at the same time. then reset the side buttons to "on" and, still using your computer: set the input from rs-232 to "tv" remote probably will not have to be set to "on" then unplug the set and, repower it; the tv should work properly again.

I will try getting to the menu but the buttons themselves don't work at this time (maybe they will for just entering the service menu). Otherwise...I guess I don't know how to send two button pushes at the same time via the hyperterminal session into the TV...any suggestions?

you should be able to use your laptop to both: enter and, adjust the service menu and, upload the firmware through the rs232 port; I have been able to do it that way before LG will tell you how; they did for me; sorry, I don't remember what they told us at the shop.

  • rowdydowney Jul 16, 2010

I called, they could not give me any information on getting into the service menu via the 232 port. They said I had to take it to a service technician...for me that is 200 miles away and most likely more money than a new set...

unless there is a usb port for you to input the new flash download from LG I would raise hell and, make them come to you and, fix this. it is their fault; sorry I could not help

If you are in the USA contact your local consumer protection agency office and, file a claim.

May be it just needs a V-chip software upgrade? This particular model is notorious for this problem. Right click on the link below and click save target as to save the file
http://us.lgservice.com/vchip/42LC2D-UE.pak
Then follow the procedure (How to upgrade software 2. Scroll down to see it)
http://us.lgservice.com/vchip_html/V-chip_upgrade_for_your_set.html

Try it and let me know,
Sai.

This set doesn't seem to have a USB input anywhere. Those instructions also seem to reference this model (42LC2D-UD) under option #3 which just says to call the company. Do you have any other idea's on how to apply the update?

    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

In that case I am afraid you are gonna have to call the company. Dont worry though as there is no part replacement involved and hence no ripoff bills.

    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Special tools are required to make a connection to the V-CHIP coz you dont have the USB port. Thank you appreciating my help with a rejection. So much for trying to help!

  • rowdydowney Jul 16, 2010

Sorry, I didn't mean it that way. I guess the question I had was 'what' special tools. Since LG isn't willing to help I was just asking the question.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Special tool meaning 1 Service remote like you said. The other one is a device that is used to give machine level instructions(aseembly language) to the V-chip. It is not pracitcal for an end user and moreover It cannot be obtained anywhere. That is the reason I have told you to place a service call.

  • rowdydowney Jul 16, 2010

Are you aware of any way to enter the Service Menu on this model of TV via the RS232 interface?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

You cannot do this from the service menu. You are gonna need an adapter to connect it to the PC and give it machine level instructions

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Not sure who gave you that info about updating from service menu!

  • rowdydowney Jul 16, 2010

Is there anything in that Service Menu that may disable those side buttons? I am 200 miles from the nearest LG certified technicians so the costs of getting it fixed that route are most likely more than just purchasing a newer set. I am willing to play with it and if I brick it so be it. What about the possibility of uploading the file through Hyperterminal and Xmodem...if I could just get to an update window? Is my absolute only option a service technician?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 16, 2010

Have allok at this. The instructions are passed like this once its connected to computer.

There is another option. You can just replace the audio/video mainboard. Should cost you not more than 200$.. Given your scenario this looks like the best possible option.

  • rowdydowney Jul 16, 2010

Awesome, thank you. I will take a look and see what I can come up with. Is DTVLab something that is available to consumers? Does that menu come up automatically or are you feeding it commands to get to those initial menu options?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 17, 2010

It has to be fed instructions in assembly langauge ex:0xfb, 0xzb . And no DTV lab is not available for the end user, that is what I was trying to tell you from the start.

  • rowdydowney Jul 22, 2010

Are you sure this is the problem? Is there any way for me to tell what firmware rev. the TV is currently on utilizing the serial interface?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jul 22, 2010

Yes I am sure that this is the problem. Otherwise I would not have suggested it in the first place

My LG 42LC7D tv wont turn on. The green led lights but no picture or sound

There could be several things going on, I would start with having the power supply checked. I've worked on several LG sets from that time frame that all had bad capacitors in the power supply causing all sorts of issues

TV won't turn on. flashes a series of 5 red lights instead of turning green

Usually Sony and LG Blinking Codes are the same. Here is what I have.
  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse,
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit,
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted.
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code.
  • Nine blinks - Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Tv turn on no pic or sound

Try unplugging it for about half an hour, plug back in, if it still does not work, you will have to open it up and do some troubleshooting.
