Question about HP LaserJet 2840 Printer

"?" on display for toner level

My 2840 shows a "?" on each of the toner cartridges levels on the display. I thought it might have been a problem with the cartridges since they were remanufactured cartridges, so I bought 2 genuine HP toner cartridges to test it. When I replaced the cyan it first showed full, but when I replaced the magenta still showed a "?". I turned off the printer and when I turned it back on the cyan went back to showing a "?". Any ideas as to what the problem is? Someone suggested the carousel might need to get adjusted. Does this sound like a good idea as to where to start? With a repair manual would this be able to be accomplished by a somewhat handy person? This is my personal use printer and I do not have much money to send it to a repair tech but I am a little handy with fixing things like printers with repair manuals.

    I have tried all of these suggestions with no results. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    My printer display shows a "?", says install supplies and they exclamation blinks orange. I thought it was the cartridges so I cleaned the contact points with alcohol. Nothing. I bought genuine HP cartridges. When I replaced the cyan it showed full, but when I replaced the magenta it still showed "?" so I turned the machine off then on. When I turned it back on the cyan went back to showing "?". I never had it installed onto my computer. I installed it as suggested by the first "expert" the printer would not properly install as it could not communicate with the printer. Second "expert" just kept telling me it was the software and the printer was fine. If the printer was fine it would say ready I would think, as I never had it installed until after the first "expert" said to try the diagnostic tool by HP. They guy I bought it from said he was told that the cartridge carousel needed to be adjusted. Could this be true and if so can it be done by a handy person? This was my initial question, but the other experts ignored it and kept telling me it were things I had already tried.

First pull ink cartridges and make sure there is not any leakage on it.Also make sure you have removed the strip from ink cartridges because those are new cartridges.Make sure there is not any paper jam inside the printer.Then You have to perform hard RESET.
For that click on below link there is graphical instruction how to RESET Click here Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

    That hard reset was for a photosmart printer. Would it be the same for a color laserjet printer. That is what I have. A HP color laserjet 2840.

The cartridges "tell" the printer their condition by: two silver "pins" that sit on and, must touch two more silver pins in the cartridge holder in the printer. find and, clean these with a dry clean cloth make sure they touch.
A service manual is available online as a pdf.

    I've done that also. I rubbed it with Alcohol (the non-drinking kind ;) ) and let it dry before I put it back in. Still no joy. Like I said, when I first replaced the cyan it showed full cartridge but when i turned it off then on again to see if the magenta I replaced would show the cyan went back to showing a "?". The drum is the only one showing full. So is this most likely a print carousel problem?

    do you have an ink reset in the menu? Does your software show the cartridges?
    Download any new HP software on your computer; you should be able to asertain the cartridge's levels
    if the sensors you cleaned are working; let me know.

    I was showing a error in the installation of the printer when I plug it in via USB. I've tried troubleshooting it a couple time and downloading a new driver via HP. But it keeps saying the USB mass storage device driver fails to install. I also went to HP to trouble shoot the USB chipset and it doesn't even show up under my device manger. Now what seems to be a multiple layer problem. Do I just bring it into a servicer?

  • lbeck73 Jul 16, 2010

    Also if it helps to know. I can use the scanner on the printer to scan to my computer.

    your printer is fine just uninstall and, reinstall your software

  • lbeck73 Jul 16, 2010

    If the printer is fine why will it only show "?". I only recently tried installing onto my computer as the other tech suggested running the diagnostic tool. It will not allow me to run any reports and will not allow me to run a test page. It does not show there are any cartridges in the printer. All the cartridges are showing a "?". I will work on getting it install onto my computer, both of them. but how is this related to the printer not showing the cartridges?

    I've seen the specs for the printer. How is that supposed to answer my question? Or are you telling me to ask in the HP support forums?

  • Hilton Bristol Jul 16, 2010

    Actually i mean this link http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum...

    it has diagnostic utilities to help find the problem faster you should try it.

  • lbeck73 Jul 16, 2010

    Unfortunately since the printer will not print and shows the "?" for all the cartridges it will not allow me to properly install the printer as it says the device is not ready. When I run the diagnostic tool it does not find the device. Any other suggestions?

  • Hilton Bristol Jul 16, 2010

    Thanks for replying,you should uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the printer,and then try running the diagnostic again.

  • Hilton Bristol Jul 17, 2010

    Since none of the solutions work, you should check to see if the cartridges are properly fitted in place and if that do not solve the problem i think you may using the wrong cartridges you should double check the cartridges to make sure they are the right ones for your printer,try these two solutions and let me know if any work.

    thank you

    I'm sorry. I don't mean to sound snippy, but here goes anyways. I'm not an idiot. I may not be formally trained repair person, but with a repair manual I can usually fix things. I just needed to know if you thought it was the print cartridge carousel needing to be aligned. I've told you that toner cartridges are correct. I"m not an idiot. I can read the label on the box. I think HP color laserjet 2840 means its for my HP color laserjet 2840 printer. And before you ask YES I took off the plastic tab and pulled to release the seal. Now I subscribed to this service to seek advice, but if you are going to treat me like I"m an idiot I will unsubscribe and go somewhere else. I'm sorry if you don't like my tone, but I don't appreciate being treated like I'm a moron.

How to reset supplies on HP 2840 laserjet?

"Would like report of supplies from 2840 laserjet. How to get it to show report"

Select 'Menu" button, then select "Reports", then select "Supplies Report".

This will print the status of the four toner cartridges and the drum.

It doesn't make sense to reset toner cartridges UNLESS you refill them
first. On the HP 2840 each cartridge/drum contains a chip that measures
the life of the unit.

You can purchase toner/chip combinations online cheaper than new
cartridges. I also purchase drum chips to extend the use of my drum
until print quality actually starts to deteriorate.

I use both of these methods to save money on supplies - buy toner and
toner chips, buy drum chip to get full use of drum unit.

Hope this helps.

How can tell if the ink level is low? hp 2420

Cartridge comes along with memory, the information of estimated ink/toner levels will stored in this memory(Depends upon the cartridge model yield will varies). When printer performs the printing, memory count will comes down, when its reaches the minimum count printer will display the message of "low ink/toner/remain pages" levels, once its reaches to '0', display will changes like "replace the cartridge"...But there is no electronic component or mechanism to measure the ink/toner levels in the cartridges.Only estimated levels only printer can recognizes.. Take usage page through menu, you will get the information that usage % & printed pages info,you can judge how much remain it can print...

How do I know which toner cartridge needs replacing?

The printer will alert you when the cartridge is running low on the display of the unit itself and also on your computer screen in the lower right hand side corner with an error display. Each place will identify the cartridge that is running low until the level is too small to print. Then printing stops until the cartridge is changed.

Paper jam problem fixed after removing toner and removing paper, but also now getting auto showing as well and ready and the cartridge ink levels. Auto not their before and now not printing. No errors...

This error message is displayed by the printer when paper is jammed in one or more locations. In such a case, users are recommended to remove the jammed paper from the specified location. The entire paper path must be checked for any pieces of paper. To stop the message, open and close the top most cover of the printer. Lastly, verify the flags and the sensors. If the problem persists, the cause of the error message could be a broken sensor or sensor lever. Check the following video hope this helps you.

I have a Brother MFC-7440N machine. On 7/22/10

The toner cartridges have a small port on the side that the printer uses to check the toner level. Our 7440N tells us it will soon need a new toner cartridge and will then print another 400 copies. Search YouTube for Brother Toner Cartridge and it will show you how to modify the cartridge by covering up the portholes with tape. Since there is obviously some kind of sensor, you might need to get a can of air and clean out any extra toner. Lastly, the Brother cartridges have "reset gears" which are replaced when the cartridges are refilled. You might have a cartridge which the gears were not replaced on.

Replaced black toner..now printer won't print any

In this case, actually it is not the Black toner that got depleted. Here the message being displayed indicate that one of the color Toner supply need to be replaced as it got depleted and currently the printer is printing in Black and white using the Black toner cartridge.

in this case, to troubleshoot these issues please try performing the following and check for the results.

* 1. Check for the level of the toner cartridges:

a) Check from the HP Toolbox application. Here are the steps to be performed from your PC:

* Access the Toolbox software.
* Select the Status tab.
* Select the Device status option.

Here you can check for the supplies status in terms of the % remaining for each toner cartridges.

b) By checking the supplies status from the printer control panel display.

On the printer display when printer is in Ready mode the supplies status can be checked from the supplies level indicator. Each toner cartridge and the Imaging drum level will be indicated by a bar which varies according to the level of the supplies present.

c) Print the supplies status page from the printer.

* On the printer control panel menu, press Menu .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button to select Reports, and then press Enter .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button to select Supplies Status, and then press Enter .

If any of the color toner cartridges and the Imaging drum have a low supply level replace them with genuine HP print cartridges.

The part numbers of the consumables are as follows:

* Black print cartridge - Q3960A
* Cyan print cartridge - Q3971A
* Magenta print cartridge - Q3973A
* Yellow print cartridge - Q3972A
* Imaging Drum - Q3964A

HP 2840, black ink drum q3964a

Hello, these printers tend to be finicky.

In other words, just replace the black toner. When the printer says its low, or empty, regardless of wether or not it is, just replace it.

Replacing the drum, when it says black toner needs to be replaced will do nothing to rectify the issue.

Buy only HP Toner and Drum cartridges for this printer. Do not try to refill toner cartridges, and do not reset drum. You will only end up destroying your printer in the process.
