Question about Microwave Ovens

3 Answers

I bought a used microwave (Rival brand) and it is just 10 months old. The microwave safe ceramic bowls I used in past microwaves are heating up so hot in this current microwave. Should I get rid of this microwave or is there some way to fix it? Thanks!

I have tried different types of bowls. I doubt I need cheaper ones. All my bowls worked fine with my last microwave. Any other help?

Hmmm, still waiting to hear back from someone else since the first two answers are not accurate. Anyone understand whether my microwave is broken or not?

I guess I don't see the point of using oven mitts to get food out of a microwave. Don't most microwaves heat the food much more than the container it is in? The plate/bowls I use are extremely hot, even after just one minute - scolding hot! Isn't this a red flag?

  • dre46102 Jul 16, 2010

I would like a response from another expert. It isn't the temperature setting, I checked that already too.

    Thank you very much!

Hi!
Normally ceramics designed for microwave ovens withstand microwave, if it heats up a lot it means that the material is absorbing microwave faster that the food it contains. Thus likely indicates that the microwave that your oven is generating is less efficient for food cooking or heating purposes. Fixing this might need new magnetron tubes capable of emitting electromagnetic waves which might be equal to the cost of a brand new microwave oven. So I think there is no room to keep this oven anymore. Hope it helps.. =)

I think that it is nothing wrong with the microwave but probably a little more operative than elder models....it is well known that ceramics is a good heat conductor and it probably just picks up the heat from the content ..
If it works I ..try to see how it behaves with glass on shorter time periods ...cause no matter what you put inside..if you use long periods of time ..sooner or later it will heat the bowl from the food inside ..if the microwaves do not affect it directly ...Also the temperature is an issue ...if you use high temps..that the container will heat at least as much to burn your fingers ...

The only issue that may be wrong with it ..if the time you set is accurate ..and it stops on time ...it is the temperature setting ...if this is broke ..than it will get ti to maximum temperature even if you set it lower...and this may cause the bowl to heat more that it should..cause the content heats more..and the temperature exchange between the food and the container is higher.....it is logically ...even in a short period of time ..if a thing is too hot ..will heat the near by touching thing more than it should...so the thing to verify is the temperature setting device..

It is because the bowl is absorbing the energy.... not the food. Dollar store bowls are the best for heating up food, or some other cheap ceramics. the microwave safe thing means it will not melt or overheat/blow up your microwave.

I have a Miele h5080bm microwave oven. How can I clean the grease of the roof and sides of the microwave?

You can put a microwave safe bowl of water in the oven and heat it to boiling, stop the microwave, then leave the bowl of water in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes. The steam will loosen the dirt and grease and then it can be wiped with a damp sponge. More stubborn grease my need dish soap on the sponge and a little more elbow grease. Rinse it well with a clean sponge or dish cloth and warm water.

Microwave taking much longer to heat food

The microwaves are produced by what is known as a KLYSTRON TUBE. Like anything, early failure is possible. There is also the possibility that the transformer or electronic circuit providing the correct voltage to the KLYSTRON has failed, either from over-use, manufacturing defect, or leakage from the KLYSTRON enclosure, which creates heat.
With microwaves being as CHEAP as they are, replacement should not be an issue.

At least twice in the past month have had food explode all over the microwave (as if it was overheating). Items vented properly or not covered at all. this time, kept making poppong noises for at lesat 10...

If you have an item overheating, try looking at the directions on the unit for the watts and adjust cooking time according to the oven. Some foods will explode if left for too long in a quick heating microwave oven. If this is a new problem and the microwave is 4 years old, you may consider the unit is beyond its useful life. Its difficult to tell w/o knowing the brand, but it could be the meagtron tube is simply wearing/worn out. Let me know if this helps. m

    Emerson Microwave MW8115SS

I bought my emerson microwave 3 years ago model# mw8115ss from walmart and have had all the problems that everyone has talked about and I thought about throwing it away until I thought about one small detail, the FUSE. China uses junky glass fuses that burst instantly with a slight power outage, door slamming to hard, moving it around, and of course constant use like myself always heating up water for bottles. I took the back of the microwave off and walla!!! a blown fuse, but wait!!! dont buy another glass fuse!!! go to your local home depot and get the ceramic fuse for microwave ovens!!! they are $2.83 at my local home depot. I replaced the junky glass fuse with the ceramic one and it has worked perfectly for six months now.

DONT let someone tell you that you cant replace a glass fuse with a ceramic one because they are full of boloney. My microwave did all kinds of things, it wouldnt turn sometimes, it would come on by itself, it would beep for no reason, turn but not heat up, you name it I had the problem. When a fuse starts to go out it can make your appliances do some strange things, check the fuse and replace it with a CERAMIC one and I promise it should eliminate your problem.
