Question about Maytag Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

We have a Maytag air conditioner model M6Y18F7B-B 10,000 BTU 240 volt. It works great when it's on but shuts off frequently and annoyingly. This makes the unit virtually useless. Why is the in line switch set to turn off so often. There is an appropriate circuit breaker on the line.

What thermostat are you referring to? This is a wall unit that plugs into a 240 volt outlet. There is a temperature setting on the unit but this does not seem to make any difference. It is definitely not a problem with overcooling or overcapacity for the space. The unit is shutting off via the in/line switch.

OK, this unit has an overheat switch which can go off when the air conditioner's circuits get hot and draw too much current.

I don't believe that your circuit breaker is at fault, since it is not tripping.

In additioni I looked up your make and model and found a source of parts at the following link:
http://www.appliancefactoryparts.com/airconditioners/maytag/m6y18f7b-b.html

There I noticed a control board which is discontinued. The problem could be there, or the control board is shutting of the a/c for safety reasons, i.e. the parts are getting too hot in the a/c unit.

I noticed that there were not any time delay parts for your a/c unit.

So, I think that you should consider getting another air conditioner, that is 10,000 btu's, that does not shut off so frequently.

You might try one that runs on 110 V rather 220 V as well, since the 220 V models are not as common.

I know that you might save some money by using a 220V a/c, but in this case, it has proven to be of a faulty design or damaged inside.

I wish you luck on finding a cooling solution.

Thanks for your reply. Actually the unit is 18,000 BTU. It shuts off so frequently as to be unusable. Are you saying that there is no fix?

If the unit is in a room smaller than it should be it can cycle too quick.
If the air blowing out is too near the thermostat in the return air it can cycle too often.
The thermostat could be defective. It could be set for too narrow a range of temp which is not adjustable. Try it at different settings to see if that makes a difference.

The knob you use to adjust the temp is the thermostat which has a bulb like sensor attached which goes to the return air area.

Compresser is shorted out across the fields. I want to comfirm the compresser size before I replace it.

Hi,
You need a niminal 3 ton compressor...the "36" in the model number gives you the 3 ton rating...36000 BTU @ 12000 BTU/ton = 3 ton...
So you need a 3 ton 240 volt single phase compressor...

AC was cooling fine. Now, won't cool room even though cool air comes out. Exhaust hose is extremely hot.

Check filter, if you have a 5000BTU unit (small) and it is extremely hot, then it wont work great for a big room. BTU is the rate of what the AC will put out. 5000 BTU is good for a small single room. 10,000 will cool a bigger room and 18,000 btu is meant to cool a home.

Identify unit capacity.

The nameplate will provide a large amount of information, including the the manufacturer's name, model, serial, electrical requirements and the BTU rating or capacity that I believe you are looking for. Like the 120 volt sisters, the 240 volt unit should also have a nameplate. If unable to locate it on the chassis or frame of the unit in a similar location as the 120 volt, you'll have to look elsewhere. A www.google.com search on model number you provided (XHD183D) for this question indicates that it is a 17,900 BTU unit. If this is the correct model, case closed. If not, continue reading.

A good place to locate a nameplate if not plainly visible on the unit as it sits in the window would be on the chassis or frame behind the decorative grille. The grille is likely held in place by several clips and a screw or two. Shut off the AC and unplug it from the power source. Remove the filter as if to clean and carefully check for and remove screws and remove the grille.

I hope this helps!

Hitachi RAS-10C2M. What size of air conditioner

If the number you say is the model number, it appears to be a 10,000 BTU.Check on the sides of the unit, or inside where the air comes out, and it should give the numbers. It should say 5000 to1800 BTU, if it is a 110 volt unit. BTU is what you are looking for if you want the output, not HP.

Circuit breaker

Happy to assist,

HOW MANY BTU IS THE AIR CONDITIONER?
And is it 110 or 220 line!

If it is using 110 or 115 volts like normal house current and it throws circuit breakers in your electric box, then you need to run a dedicated line just for the Air Conditioner!
Usually this happens to 110 -115 volt air-conditioners that are more than 12,000 BTU and do not have a dedicated electric line in the wall only for the air conditioner!

New air conditioners have a circuit breaker built into the units plug!
And I have seen some that throw that breaker to off frequently even if it's only an electric surge! Which it should not do!
if its the case and it's new, take it back to the store and ask for a different model, size, or brand!
Fedders had an 18,000 BTU/ 110-115 volt unit that did this with every single unit last year! I stopped selling that unit only!!
