Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite Console - Black

9 Answers

Hello fellow FixYa experts, A problem with 360 NHL '09

Hello fellow FixYa experts, I have a stumper and I need help. While I am proficient at what I do, major appliance tech, I can't figure the mystery of my 360. The problem is this, I have two xbox 360 elite consoles that work great. However, I am having problem just recently with the game NHL '09, but it's strange. I can play the game in the "play now" mode but not in any of the season modes or franchise modes etc. The weird thing is I can play all other original xbox or 360 game titles with zero issues and I can also play the NHL '09 title in the other console without issue. Anyone have any ideas ? Any help would very appreciated. Thank you. macmarkus :)

Hopefully I can clarify a bit. In the one 360 all modes work fine, play now, franchise, career, any selection is no problem. In the other 360 I can ONLY select "play now" and must select it quickly or it brings up the error message "disc dirty or unreadable, please remove and clean disc to continue", as it does in the other modes with the difference being in the other modes it will show the error immediately upon selecting said modes. It is only in this one 360 though, the other is fine, yet this 360 has no issue with any other titles/games.

Given your description, the only difference between your two consoles is the data they have collected on their hard drives or memory cards.

I recommend that you move your "original" XBox hard drive and any memory cards it uses to the XBox only lets you "play now".

    I hope this helps.

Please comment with any additional information.

    Jul 31, 2010 - Hey Jaxplanet,

That is a possible solution that had occured to me, except I`m not entirely sure how I`d go about transferring from one hdd to the other.

I`d need to transfer all my data on one hdd to the other and visa versa as my wife and I share one 360 ( the one I use and with the hiccup ) but not the other so I don`t want to loose or corrupt any of her saved game data.

There is quite alot of data to transfer, but I can do it if I know how.

    Thanks,

I gather that you cleared the cache as per the article. IF this game has never played right in this machine then I would venture to say that the dvd/ram player is having issues with the disk. There is a way to calibrate it though. The only other thing that I would recommend would be the hard disk clean up.

I think I've exhausted all other suggestions, to my limited knowledge.

Before I try formatting the hdd, how can I back-up all the other stuff first ?

I have quite a bit of music and other game data I don't want to loose and if that is my only option, then **** on NHL '09...I'll pre-order NHL 11 instead. :P

    Thanks again.

In order to backup things on an xbox you have to go to a store and get a special cable.

  • Mark MacDonald
    Mark MacDonald Aug 02, 2010

A special cable ? Can you be specific...what kind of cable ? ethernet, hdmi, component, what ?

I assume this would be to connect to my PC. Correct, or no ?

Hi, the reason why you can only play the game in "play now mode "is because it's not the full version of the game.

Full version of NHL'09 does not play in that mode.

Get the original full version and you will see that play now mode version is a trial version of the game not the full version.

Take care.

Thanks for the reply, even if it was presumptious !

Of course it is the full version, did you read any of the prior post's ? I've had the game since purchasing it off the shelf in '08. If it where a demo I would've stated that.

Please do not try to solve problem's with wild assumptions, it is a waste of everyones time ! Try asking the person you are supposedly trying to help.

Wow, this is going to be tough, for sure. It could boil down to an unusually minute problem with the dvd's laser intensity setting, a slight scratch on the dvd being read on one player, and on the edge on the other, not allowing any extra functions of the software. There can also exist some physical difference, of wearing of parts, which affects reading speed, although I don't think this is your case. Lastly, can there exist a programming code to enable or disable certain modes, unless the product was registered, etc.,? Not sure...
Here's evidence of the locking of a DVD:
http://fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=84818
Here's another problem people reported:
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/13/nhl-09-disc-error-also-known-as-the-cache-time-bomb/
There are also, to further the mystery, different versions of DVD drives:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm
Probably not significant, but just throwing it out.

I was aware of the reported issues and had read several forums linked to my membership at "xboxmagazine.com" but I've played 5 or 6 complete seasons and figured mine was good. Unfortunately none of those cache clearing suggestions worked for me nor does the turning off "autosave". I know it isn't the drive either because I've swapped hdd with my other 360 and then it's ok.

Thanks for the ideas none the less.

For that check NAT settings and application sharing in your router where internet cable is connected. Open port which is used by your console then check. You can access router with below method. Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link. http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.15.1 or http://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

I don't have either console connected to the internet nor "xboxlive" and I never have, not sure if that matters but I can't imagine it would. ( ? )

    macmarkus

  • You can access your x box console settings.
For that connect x box to computer's ethernet lan port with ethernet lan cable.
then you can access it with it's ip.
Just open internet explorer then type xbox ip in address bar then press enter then you can seee configuration page of x box make sure all settings and ip settings are fine.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
    Thanks for using FixYa.

    Hi,

I don't understand where you're coming from. Can you please explain to me why you keep referencing the internet connection/ Lan & ip address etc. ? I don't want to connect my consoles to the internet now, ( I never play multiplayer even...just myself, single player. That doesn't seem to have anything to do with my NHL '09 game not working on the single console. Have you read my original post and the dialogue since ?

Or, explain why you are referring to the configuration/settings please and thank you.

Well, for what it's worth, when my kids have issues with their Xbox I treat it like a computer. Start by using a DVD cleaner to clean the DVD player, make sure you have the latest updates, I've been lucky and only had to download it once all the others that were needed were included in the games that required them. Since you have two of them swap the hard drives and see if that allows playing the game in the Modes you want on that Xbox. If it does it is certainly an update problem or hard drive problem. I also found that using an Air cooler on the power supply resolved several of these types issues and the over heating problem the kids sometimes run into. Sounds strange but it worked.

    Hello,

Thanks for the reply. It's kinds funny but I swear to god it's true. I was discussing this exact idea earlier tonight about swapping the hard-drives, so I have to say "good idea" ha ha ! I won't get a chance until tomorrow though, but I have tried the power pack and the cleaning disc, lens etc...to no avail. The unit will give me the error even when first powered up so I didn't think the pack was the problem anyway. At this juncture I'm trying anything though.

I'll let you know tomorrow evening what I find with the HD swap.

  • Mark MacDonald
    Mark MacDonald Jul 28, 2010

    Hello JJ,

I tried the swap-a-roo of hard-drives, unfortunately it had the effect I expected. It is the hard-drive from the other 360 I have and it has always played without an issue on that console. Having said that yes it work`s, which I guess is good as this confirms my original suspicion of the save file for my NHL `09 being corrupted some how.

Although I have many power outages in the rural area I reside as well as voltage surges/drops and I know even with protectors on everything electronic, storage devices are very vulnerable to such conditions.

It sucks but I guess I`ll try deleting the files saved for my career, franchise and season etc. and see what happens now. It seems to be the only logical step left.

Thanks for your help to all who have made suggestions. I will still be open to further suggestions if this doesn`t work but I`ll post back after trying it.

Meant to say how would the settings "change" from one moment to the next.

  • Hilton Bristol Jul 25, 2010

Hi i will give the informations to restore the settings to its original, please follow these steps:The Xbox 360 has a host of settings that users can tweak. You can set up your Internet connection, alter settings for an HDTV and configure family options, among other things. If for some reason one of the changes is causing trouble, you can restore your Xbox to factory defaults. This will reset your Xbox to the settings it had when it shipped from the factory without wiping your hard drive.

  • Turn on your Xbox 360. If you have a game inserted and it starts automatically, press the "Xbox" button and then "Y" to go to the Dashboard.

  • Step 2Go to the "My Xbox" tab.

  • Hilton Bristol Jul 25, 2010

  • Step 3Scroll to the end and select "System Settings".

  • Step 4Scroll to the bottom and select "Initial Setup".

  • Step 5Confirm that you wish to run the Initial Setup utility. Once the utility completes, your Xbox will be restarted and you will be brought back to your Dashboard. You may need to perform a firmware update to play games or connect to Xbox Live.

Let me know if it work

Hi you can also try follow these steps:
Copy or Delete Saved ItemsYou can copy items on your hard drive to a memory unit, connected PC, or a connected USB device. You can also free space on your hard drive by deleting items.

To copy or delete an item from your hard drive:

    1. With the hard drive attached to the Xbox 360 console, select System, Memory.

    2. Select your hard drive.

    3. Choose the type of item, then the specific item that you want to copy to another location or delete from the hard drive.

NoteIf you delete content originally included with your hard drive, it cannot be restored. Make sure you do not want to keep any content before deletion.

  • Hilton Bristol Aug 01, 2010

TroubleshootingIf you encounter problems, try the possible solutions provided below.

Hard Drive Not a Listed Storage DeviceIf your hard drive is not listed as a storage device, try the following steps, in order.

    1. Make sure the hard drive is fully inserted into the hard drive bay and looks level. Turn the console off, then on again.

    2. Turn the console off and remove the hard drive. Turn the console on and then off again. Reattach the hard drive.

    3. If available, try the hard drive on another console, or try another hard drive on your console to pinpoint the problem.

NoteDamaged hard drives will not show up in the Xbox Guide and could harm your Xbox 360 console. Hard drives that have been crushed, immersed in liquids, or exposed to intense heat may be damaged beyond use and will not show up in your list of storage devices.

I may be able to help you with your XBox360 NHL2K9 franchise mode problem. Please provide some details by describing exactly what the symptoms are of your NHL 09 season or franchise mode play issue.

For example is this a 'freezing up' issue, or a 'greyed out' menu option problem, or something different? Does it start the mode fine and then **** out?

And do I understand that the problem 360 previously played in season mode and now it doesn't? Or did the one unit never play any other mode but 'play now' mode?

The more information you provide about your 360's behavior, the more accurate and specific our troubleshooting can be.

    I hope that helps.

      Hi,

Thanks for your reply.
Let me know what other info I can provide that may help you help me.
