Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

1 Answer

My DC 17 is plugged. I can see through the small hole in the top blue "flower shaped" that the holes at the top of the canister are plugged with hair & dirt. I cannot see anyway to get to these small round holes. Is there a way to remove the top blue "flower shaped" piece? I have removed the inner cone from the clear canister but still cannot get up underneath.

Please kindly follow the steps below to clean your vaccum cleaner,
1.) Remove the clear plastic handle. You will have to take out two screws and then unclip from the from the front. It's stiff, I gently used a flat head screw driver to pry it up.

  • Step 2 2.) Remove the clear bottom part of the canister.
  • Step 3 3.) Look up inside the grey cyclone canister. On each side of the long vertical tubes you will see a single torx screw. You might need to feel around, they are hard to see since all of the dirt. Unscrew those.
  • Step 4 4.) That part of the canister comes off - it has some sealant / glue holding it you will have to break it loose.
  • Step 5 5.) Now there are 4 more torx pieces on the white parts of the cyclone. Remove those.
  • Step 6 6.) Last! Remove the eight torx screws holding the purple top on.
  • Step 7 7.) Now you have access to the cyclone tubes. I can see why water wouldnt work. These things were PACKED solid with dog fur and carpet. Each of those cyclone tubes was loaded--- remove the dirt.
  • Step 8 8) Reverse disassembly--- remember to use a "star" pattern to tighten the screws so you make a nice seal.
  • Step 9 9.) Clean the groove where the bottom of the cyclone meets the top - the area with the glue. This will allow for a better seal.

Vacuum has lost suction and is making a hissing noise

I had the same problem with my Kompressor.Initially I had cleaned all three removable filters. There is two in the canister that can be washed with dish soap. The HEPA filter is located in a compartment on the lower front side of the vacuum. This HEPA filter should not be washed.I found that tapping it inside a trash can dislodged alot of dust from it. After cleaning all the filters and canister I was having the same hissing noise coming from a small hole near the bottom of the vacuum. Next I removed a hose fitting on the lower back of the vacuum and that is where I found a very large amount of debris clogging up the hose. I used a metal coat

My Shark navigator is making a very loud swooshing sound out of side of canister.

I had the same noise coming out of the side of the canister although I would specify it as a sucking noise. The noise is coming out of a hole on the side of the canister. If you block the hole it sounds normal. This lead me to believe that there was no damage. After further research I found that this whole is actually a release when air cannot make it through the top of the canister. Simple resolution. Take the canister out of its holster and clean both the top part and the metal cone inside and your vacuum will work good as new :) ~=MaGiC=~

I vacuumed up some material and then pulled it out now it has no suction from the vacuum head

yikes! hard to lose suction on a dyson! i have this one and have had this problem a couple of times..

remove the canister - check the line in and the hole that goes into the canister for blockages.

check the filter - you can (and should) remove and clean the small foam filter every 6 months.

if it is still clogged - depending on what you vacuumed up....
In the top part of the canister there is a piece that has holes - if these become clogged it can reduce suction.. clean this part.

If you have by some chance vacuumed up ashes or fine dust from drywall.. etc... or if it was wet... and you have done all of these things.. i would take it to be checked... these are no no's for the workings of a vacuum :) Good Luck!

With a torx screwdriver! There's nothing special about these screws except the shape of the hole in the head. Commonest size in small domestic machines is T15.

The screw that holds the handle to the top of the canister came completely loose. How do I get to it to reattach?

Buy a epoxy cement and fill the hole with it, then drill a hole a little smaller than the screw, and finally insert screw.

I have a dyson that is picking up just fine when on vacuum mode, however when I try to use the suction tube there is no suction at all. It is not blocked and the canister is empty. Help!

    Hi, I have an upright DC03, brilliant machine. Mine wouldn't **** and had the following symptoms;
    - it sucked ok from the top hole where the canister joins the unit - with the canister the dust didn't spin aroun inside the canister like it normally does and there was no **** at the hose end or brush end. - with the top of the canister attached (the cyclone) but not the bottom it sucked through the cyclone - the small valve on top of the cyclone unit was sucking heaps
this indicated to me the machine was sucking through the cyclone unit but when the canister was put on it was blocked - hence the tremendous sucking through the valve on the top of the cyclone. As far as I could see the cyclone wasn't blocked so I poked some wire down the tube inside the machine that runs from the bottom of the unit (where the hose sits) up to the bottom hole where the canister joins.
The DC03 has 2 holes where the canister attaches, it seems like it sucks air through the top hole, through the cyclone and through the lower hole sucks the dust up this inner tube into the canister. Check that tube, shine a torch from the top hole and you should be able to see the light at the bottom. Make sure you clear it completely.
Mine was very very blocked. I kept poking and removing dust until I could see light at through the tube. Works fine now.
Hopefully this helps someone as it took me awhile to work it out.
    Good luck

    Reassemble of handle on upright

place handle half with the posts that hold the screws facing up.

silver pole with hole that goes completely throuigh goes over lower screw post (Long side)

static wire - L shaped end goes in small hole on opposite side of handle just below
vacuum switch hole, curve of wire should follow curve of handle and fits into top of
silver pole and pushes againt it providing push to hold siver pole.

    hope this helps
