TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If this doesn't work, append a comment to this post and we'll go on to the next step.

Okay, next step: Press and hold the 2ND, left-arrow, and right-arrow keys. Press and release the ON key. Does that do anything (you may have to adjust the contrast, as originally described)?

One more try: Remove one of the four AAA batteries. Press and hold the (-) and ) keys (right of the decimal point and above the 8). Continue holding the keys while replacing the battery. Keep holding the keys for at least five more seconds before releasing.

My Ti-83 will not turn on, even after putting in new batteries. Occasionally some black will appear on the screen along with some symbols but it then shuts off. Any ideas what is wrong?

Try to increase the contrasts by pressing the key (2nd) and the up arrow until you can see the screen.
Tell me if this fixes the problem or not.

My Ti-nspire won't turn on. Replaced batteries

Same thing happened to me. I replaced the batteries, and now it won't progress past the start-up loading screen. It just loads and freezes. I had to remove the batteries just to turn it off.

Do NOT HOLD the 2nd button instead just press it once and then press the arrows hard. It will work just fine

Only the on button and shade of screen works

Sorry to hear that you all are having problems with your calculators. I don't think that resetting the units will help. You should contact TI.

TI-89 & Liquids :(

The screws on the back are Torx bits size T6. You can pick up that type of screwdriver at Sears (I got a set of 12 micro screwdrivers marketed toward jewelers and hobbyists from there - lifetime guarantee) or maybe a local hardware store. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that once you're inside you can do a lot to revive your calculator. Some liquids can really take their toll on electronic circuitry, and you will probably need a volt meter and some more sophisticated tools to test whether your components are still good. Your best bet is probably to contact TI and see if they will repair it for cheap. Otherwise, I've seen (and bought) some TI-89s for $50 or $60 off eBay and Craigslist.
