Don't worry about that. It's normal. When you install a fresh OS to your computer there were no other programs other than the basic window utilities unless your OS is associated with other applications like MS Office, PDF Reader, et. but it's seldom to happen not unless someone reprogram the image of your installer. I am sure it's your first time to see it. But these are the things I want to share:

  1. Install all important drivers of your PC.
  2. Make a list of Applications that you want to be installed on your PC and look for a copy of it. There are lot of Softwares, Freewares, and Sharewares available online. Usually when you install it, the application always ask you if you want to send a shortcut on your desktop.
  3. If you want your My Computer and My Documents to be visible in your desktop then go to Start Menu and look for those items and right click it and hit Show On Desktop.
  4. If you want to see all your programs and utilities then go to start menu and hit all programs to see everything on your PC. And if you want it to be visible then right click the item and select send to desktop.

SOURCE: Windows Vista Ultimate: Recycle Bin

If you find that when your Recycle Bin does not refresh but shows the same icon, irrespective of whether it is empty or full, here are some trouble-shooting steps you can try. Hopefully, one of these 5, should help you. 1) Check if you have installed any Theme or an Icon Package, and see if uninstalling it makes the problem go away. if so then the problem is in the Theme or Package. Also try switching the theme to Windows Classic theme and them back to Vista Aero default. 2) Right-click Desktop > Personalize > Change desktop icons > Disable / Uncheck Recycle Bin. Then click Restore Defaults. Click OK. Reboot. Now using the same method Enable /Check Recycle Bin, then restore defaults. Click OK. Refresh Desktop. 3) In the 'Desktop Icons settings' Dialog Box, check on Recycle Bin.
Then click on the ‘Recycle Bin Empty’ icon.
Click on 'Change Icon' tab.
rom the new box which opens, select the icon that shows the 'Recycle Bin Full'.
Do the same for 'Recycle Bin Full' icon.
Change it to 'Recycle Bin Empty' icon.
Now click Apply.
Now check whether, when the Recycle Bin is full, the empty-icon show. And vice versa.
If it does, go back and again change back the icons, to what they should be, using the same procedure, mentioned above. 4) Use the Group Policy Object Editor.
Type gpedit.msc in Vista's Start Menu Search bar and hit enter.
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop > Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop > Double click on it > Enable > Apply Reboot.
Next, follow the same above-mentioned steps. But this time instead of 'Enable' select 'Not Configured.
See if it helps. 5) Repair or Re-build the Icon Cache. For this the easiest way would be to download and use TuneUp Utilities or Stardocks Icon Packager. They are not freeware, but you can use the trial versions to get your job done.

Does my wd 320 gb passport have a built in recycle bin

A "recycle bin" is installed on all drives by Windows. It is part of the Windows Operating System, and was not installed on the drive at the factory.

If you have the your version of Windows set to display or "show" all file types, including system and hidden types, you'll see the recycle bin on the drive.

Recyle Bin contents are not going to it, when I click on the icon on my HP Laptop, it just takes me to my folders and there's nothing in the recycle bin after I delete something.

Scan your computer for a virus.

It sounds like your shortcut is misplaced or a setting was set on the recycle bin.

Right click on your recycle bin and see if the box is checked, if so, please uncheck it.

Do not move files to the Recycle Bin.

Follow these instructions to restore your recycle bin:

The recycle bin icon has disappeared from the desktop. Can you help?

Hello

Firstly, what operating system are you using? I am going to give you steps to fix this in both xp and vista.

Windows XP:
  1. Right click any blank area of your desktop. In the menu that comes up, click on “Properties.”
  2. Step 2 Click on the “Desktop” tab, and then click on the “Customize Desktop” button.
  3. Step 3 On the “General” tab, you will see a field with some standard desktop icons. Click on the “recycle bin” icon and then click on “Restore Default.” Click “OK,” and then “Apply,” and finally “OK” again. You should see your recycle bin back in its spot on your desktop. If your recycle bin is still not appearing on your desktop, try the next steps.
  4. Step 4 Right click a blank area of your task bar, point to “Toolbars,” and then click on “Desktop.”
  5. Step 5 Click on the double carets (>>) next to “Desktop” on your taskbar. Look for your recycle bin in the menu that comes up.
  6. Step 6 Drag the recycle bin from the menu to your desktop by clicking on it with your mouse, holding the mouse button down, and moving it to the desktop.
Windows Vista:

First, right-click on the Desktop and select Personalize. In the dialog box on the right hand side, there should be an option called Change desktop icons.

On the Change desktop icons dialog box, go ahead and check the Recycle Bin box to add that back to your desktop. You’ll notice that there is a Full Recycle Bin and Empty Recycle Bin icon.

If you click Apply, your icon should now be back on the desktop.

Really hope this can be of help.

Kind regards
Andrea

C:\Windows\Installer id too big

the folder on my vista ultimate is only 0.9GB theres extra not needed content in there on your system, use windirstat
http://windirstat.info/

to see what the biggest files there are and delete them or you can just move them to your recycle bin, then restart the computer and make sure that everythign works properly before emptying the recycle bin, but those are not important must have files so you don't have to worry about them most of the time harmless.
