If you boot the computer from a windows CD/DVD in he first stages of installation it will look for all partitions on your hard disks. When it finds your lacie highlight the partition and use the option to delete partition. Repeat this for any other partitions you wish to remove. Now you can use the format option and install windows as normal. Cheers from Scott please dont forget to vote

Setting up external storage without losing hard drive info

Likely the drive came formatted for a PC; also likely that the existing data is PC based.. Reformatting the drive for your Mac (a good thing to do) WILL erase the existing data, but you may not need it...

If you want to save it anyhow, just drag-and drop whatever's on the Lacie (before formatting) to your desktop (maybe in a new folder if you'd like).

Then format the LaCie for the Mac (with journaling is best) and once done, you can drag the stuff you put on the desktop back onto the hard drive.

Hope this helps

The LaCie rugged 1TB keeps self ejecting...I have done disk repair and have reformatted. Is it a bad one?

1. yes and you will need to get a replacement.
2. there is a possible failing usb controller on the drive.
3. If you used the Window repair to fix this this has possibly made it worse.

Doing a Format on your PC Should Be A Last Resort! Reformatting your Windows computer is usually the absolute last resort and is often done unnecessarily. Before you go through the process of doing a reformat of your hard drive please take a few moments to read through the rest of our website. If you are reformatting to fix problems with your Windows computer it's possible that by using some of the tips on our site, or by downloading or purchasing some of the tools or products that we link to, you might be able to avoid the need to reformat your computer. Because doing a complete reformat of your computer will erase the contents of the hard drive and require you to reinstall all software, reformatting is usually a last resort. Some Computer Manufacturers Make Reformatting Easy Many name-brand PC manufacturers include a restore-disk which makes it easy to reformat your PC and return it to the state it was in on the day you purchased it. Some manufactures supply only a standard Microsoft Windows CD, and some (usually lower-end PC manufacturers) supply neither! If your PC did not come with a restore or reformatting CD, then you will need to take extra steps to format your hard drive and get Windows re-installed. Back Up Your Files Before You Reformat your Windows PC!Because the reformat or restore process erases everything on your computer, it is critical to have a backup of any important files on your computer. You will also need your original software install disks to reinstall any software you have purchased.

Things to do before you reformat your PC hard drive
  • Write down or print out all notes and internet pages because once the format process begins, you will no longer have access to them (or anything else in the PC)
  • As already stated, BACKUP all important files and data! When you reformat your computer everything will be erased!
  • Make sure you have all the CDs and other software. All programs will have to be reinstalled after you format the hard drive. Don't forget about software that came with hardware such as printers, scanners, etc.
  • Write down the brand and information for all the hardware on your computer. Look in the Device Manager and make note of the brand and model of network adaptors, video cards, sound cards, printers, modems, and displays. After reformatting you might need this information to reinstall drivers.

How do I reformat my Raid?

You don't mention which operating system you're on, and reformat instructions are specific to the OS. Also, I assume the OS is installed elsewhere, on another primary drive. If your OS is on this hard drive it's whole different kettle of fish.
It sounds like there is some corruption in your files, and the drive wants you to essentially erase them clean so it can clear up the mess and start anew. That is what is meant by reformat.
Please go to this link and attempt to follow the LaCie instructions to "Fix volume corruption"
http://www.lacie.com/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10244&article=search
If you have trouble with this, or don't understand how to go about data recovery, you will need to learn how to backup the entire content of the drive before reformatting it. In that case, I recommend you consider using a full image backup utility like Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/ or Symantec Ghost.
If you have current backups of the data stored on this drive, and understand how to work with them to restore the information to your hard drive, you can safely proceed with the reformat.
If this answers your question, please take a moment to rate this post. And by all means, if you're not certain about how to proceed, write back and I'll be happy to point you to some tutorials that can guide you through the process.

why not reinstall sp3 again for windows xp if it freezes then it might be looking for files that don't exist anymore. If the virus attatched itself to your files they may have been removed when you ran your virus software. you don't need to format to reload windows. Just simply do a clean reinstall on C drive.
