On a chest freezer , the coils are located inside the walls of the freezer . The heat normally felt on the outside is the condensor coils inside the wall. The coldness felt on the inside is from the evaporator coils also inside the freezer wall .If the inside of the freezer has over 1/2 inch of frost , then defrosting may work . If NO frost on the inside , possible leak in the coils which are not accessable . Only solution is to replace the freezer . Anyone can buy refrigerant 134a which is what your freezer uses .

tcool.....refrigeration is NOT your AOE .

tcool....134a CAN be used in domestic refrigeration. Anyone can buy it in an auto parts store ( license or not ) . Due to small amount of refrigerant used in domestic refrigeration ( refrigerators and freezers ) sometimes a can or 2 would be the most convenient AND inexpensive way to recharge a refrigerator or freezer . The only difference is the small can contains a small amount of oil which will replace the oil dispensed from evavuation and reclaiming and the large ( 30 and 50 lb. ) cans will dispense refrigerant with NO oil . Since gas ( refrigerant ) cannot be pumped , it has to be mixed with a solid ( oil ) which can be pumped . The small cans would be the best ( with the oil ) but not feasable ( money wise ) if in the refrigeration business .

Unless you have a refrigeration license, you can't buy refrigerant. Most systems are sealed systems from the factory. If it gets worse, you may have a leak. Most likely, one or both of the coils, evaporator and condenser are dirty or clogged. Check them, clean them and see how it works then.

Testimonial: "I won't know how helpful until I try to find the condenser and coils. I'm really not stupid, just an old lady who is not a repairman. I did call one serviceman and he told me throw it out and buy a new one, because repairs would cost more than the freezer is worth, but I don't like to throw stuff out that is still running. More later."

aasc....I would say refrigeration is not YOUR AOE since 134a is not used for domestic freezers and unless you want to buy an 8 ounce can in an auto parts store for your car, you need an EPA certification and/or a refrigeration license to purchase refrigerant. Which sounds like you have neither.

My Bosch upright freezer motor runs and gets hot, but the appliance does not freeze inside. What could the trouble be??

I would suggest either the coolant has partially escaped and needs re-pressurising or the compressor is damaged. Both of these faults would result in the motor overheating and both would need the attention of a service engineer.

Why does my freezer stay at 38 degrees?

while i have no specific experience with this item, i did belatedly find out (after i threw out the a.c) that you can buy a valve that can be screwed into the refrigerant coil allowing you to charge up even a "sealed" system. so perhaps you just need to add some refrigerant. just a thought.

I have a Frigidaire refrigerator with a top mount freezer, no ice maker. I have noticed that in really cold weather, the unit becomes less efficient, and in extreme cases, stuff in the freezer begins to...

When it gets very cold the gas (freon) in the refrigeration system shrinks....because the properties that make cold also work against you in this case...when the gas shrinks in volume it then does not work properly anymore...the hot gas does not turn back into a liquid but stays as a gas and because of that it does not cool when going through the expansion cap tube or expansion valve. If you were to keep it in the cold all the time you could add a bit of charge to make it work, but then if you move it to warm or the weather warms... now you are over charged... just one of those "no win" deals...
They don't make these things to run in extreme environmental changes..they like it a consistent temp. all the time...

Freezer is in garage and has worked up until now. Still runs, makes a humming sound and is cold but not freezing. Food is thawing.

If it is below freezing in your garage the freezer will not work.
No freezer except one Frigidaire freezer will work in the extreme cold.
This one has a button to switch it to a refrigerator in the winter and a freezer in the summer.
