Question about Samsung Televison & Video

1 Answer

There is a plastic box about 6 inches in height and coming up from the sub-deflection board of our Samsung HCM5525W Rear projection TV. We are trying to replace the red IC (STK392-040), and need to take remove all wiring connected to the board in order to take the board out of the TV and replace the IC. We are unsure how to disconnect the wires (one larger red wire and one thinner white wire) from this black plastic box. The box is located to the right of the heat sinks for the IC's, almost in the direct center of the sub-deflection board. Any help on disconnecting these wires or the black box from the board would be extremely appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hi,
STK392-040 are located on convergence board that is located on right of deflection board that does not need to be removed for convergence output ICs replacement, however, you can remove red wires through following procedure.
Push red thick wire end that goes to plastic box (high voltage block) and turn it 45 or 90 degree and pull out, it has some sort of lock on top of its end that needs to unlock by turning it in HV Block.
Other red wire goes to Focus Block of tv that has 6 control knobs, remove its rubber cap and pull the wire end gently from focus block.
Can you post pictures of these wires here to help you in little better way after marking on those pictures.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

Here is a picture from range of the back of the TV

    http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n253/...

Here is a closer picture of this plastic black box that I am talking about

    http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n253/...

Here is another picture of this mystery black box

    http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n253/...

Since the IC's are hidden behind the left sides of the heat sinks, it would be extremely difficult to remove them and solder the part in place without removing the board. We only need to get this plastic black box disconnected and then we are off and running removing the entire board to replace the red IC. Thanks so much for responding, hope the pictures will help!

The thicker red wire runs into a box mounted near the back of the television, and it appears that wire can be disconnected from that box and still remain in the plastic box connected to the board. The white runs much further into the back of the television and I cannot see what it is connected to. Can these two wires be disconnected directly from this plastic box? I've been diligently staring at this box trying to figure out how these 2 wires can be disconnected. I've played a little with them, but nothing rough because I am worried about breaking something. Again, very thankful for your help!

OK, I'm posting back picture001 with marking on it that will help you.
Do not try to remove wires from Flyback Transformer as mentioned in picture.
There is plastic lock that holds red thick wire, twist it to unlock it.
Thick red wire can be removed from HV block that is mentioned in picture and procedure has been said in previous post.
Less thicker wire goes to focus control that is located lower front of tv, remove speaker grille to see focus block, it has 6 control knobs.

Below is exploded view taken from service manual about how to remove/ install HV cable (red thick wire) in HV block.
Hope this will help you to pull out HV cable from HV block in your tv that is installed in opposite direction so turn picture up side down to understand it easily.

How do we remove the speaker panel? It seems like it is snapped in and do not want to pull hard and break something. Thanks

Pull lower part as shown in below image then you will see screws holding front speaker grille, remove screws and take out front grille.

Ok, the board is out of the tv, but the IC seems to be stuck very tightly to the heat sink from the heat paste. Is there a compound that will loosen the heat paste? I have tried prying the IC off the heat sink, but it will not come loose from the heat sink at all =(

IC would be fixed with two screws with heat, remove these screws, unsolder IC pins from circuit board then remove IC easily.

  • claymayer Jul 16, 2010

Is the red IC the IC closest to the back panel of the TV, the closest one in the picture we gave you? We figured it was because there were 3 wires labeled R, G, & B next to the heat sinks and the R was the one next to the closest to the back panel. Thanks!

We put in the new IC into what we thought was the red heat sink (based on the wire harness, the red wire closest to that heat sink. After reconnecting all the wires and turning the tv on, we are back to square one. Nothing has changed in the convergence screen and the red alignment will not move. Below are a couple pictures of what the convergence setting screen looks like:

    Overall TV screen:

    http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n253/...

Bottom left convergence alignment (with blue centered on green as much as possible):

    http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n253/...

Better screenshot of overall TV screen (notice red line dipping down from the top left):

    http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n253/...

I am a loss for words right now. I was nearly positive it was the red IC that burned out since the red convergence settings would not move, and still do not. We only replaced 1 of the IC's, but is it possible that this has nothing to do with the IC's at all? Any further direction would be extremely helpful... and thank you so much for helping us all day, I dont think we could have even replaced the IC without you. Much obliged.

Hi, Sorry for delayed reply because I was sleeping.
It is always good to replace both big black convergence ICs (STKs) at same time for this kind of issue in tv.
Convergence output section drives 6 convergence coils of three picture tubes and each IC deal with 3 coils. So replace both ICs and then check tv picture quality.
    Thanks.

There are a series of plastic retaining clips that need to be depressed in order to work the deflection board from its plastic frame mount.

Samsung HCM5525W - Picture pulses slightly

It sounds like a filter cap is out or a resistor has gone o/c. check the circuit around the sub deflect board and anything that feeds it sometimes when convergence boards go they also take out a smaller component that is linked with the deflection. In this case the capacitors need to be tested or looked at for any signs of venting.

Convegence board

your model has the Ics and resistors on the sub delection PCB board. You can get a new replacement board at the following link with free tech support to help you install it as it the entire large circuit board on the right side of the set. You need the board called the P54A chassis Sub deflection board under their Samsung parts category.
Heres the link.

If the new sub board didnt fix the problem you will need a new convergence board as the sub deflection boards with the ICs only powers the convergence board. thats a complete seperate board. Let me know if you need more assistance.
