Memory card is not being read.

You can't save PS1 games on a PS2 memory card. You need to buy a PS1 memory card to save PS1 games. The PS1 card will plug into the standard memory slot on a PS2, but the insides are different.

Either the memory card or the port is dusty.
Maybe the memory card is damaged.
Try starting up the PS2 with the CD tray open, go into your browser and see if it reads the memory card.
If it does then your card may be full.

Try turning the ps2 off then taking the memory card out then putting it back in and turn the system on.

You can use Action Replay Max (AR Max) disc to format your ps2 memory card. Some case when you can't saving, that problem with memory port on the console. try to go Browser menu and then plugin your memory, you should see the memory icon.

Your question is somewhat confusing, using a playstation 2 memory card, will have PS2 game saves on it, how would you play PS2 games on a PS1 from the save, you can't. If you just mean you are using a PS2 card for a PS1, the way a PS2 card saves data is different to a PS1 card, so it probably won't work You can use your PS1 memory cards in the PS2.
